Re: How do you remove pickle smell????

Lowe's has the food grade buckets for about $3. They have a sticker on the side that indicates what it can be used for. I looked at pickle buckets too and the general consensus is that you cant ever...
  2. Re: 1 deep with medium vs double deep brood boxes

I prefer double deeps myself. In the fall they really pack in the nectar from the goldenrod giving them ample stores for winter. I agree with Ace, they do tend to break cluster more in the winter...
  3. Re: Will leaving an empty super on my new hives cause problems?

Goldenrod smells like dirty gym socks! You'll know it when it starts to come in.

Re: Panty Hose As A Filter

Brilliant! I've been trying to figure out how the filter mine with panty hose, but couldn't figure out the best way. My "Eureka" moment. Thanks.

    Re: Mann Lake Pro Feeder

The Brushy Mountain feeders come with floats to prevent drowning. I kill more bees putting the cover back on.

    Re: Mann Lake Pro Feeder

My last shipment from them took 7 days from order to door. They don't get in a big hurry.

Re: two deep hive one deep full of honey

I agree with Greg, except I'd extract all but the two outside frames. This gives the queen room to lay and leaves them with stores; and you don't have to worry about them drawing comb. At this time...

    Re: Mann Lake Pro Feeder

I use the Brushy Mtn feeders as well and I really like them. Sometimes the floats will get stuck on the bottom if you go too long between refills but your hive tool can knock them loose. They also...

    Re: When to harvest honey??

If you've added supers then you don't want to continue feeding...unless you want sugar water honey.

When the super frames are capped then the honey is ready.
  10. Re: Bees not cleaning up extracting equipment

This is exactly why I will be extracting this weekend. Hopefully there will be enough flow to refill those empty supers.

Re: Jacket and veil or whole suit

I got the Ultra Breeze Jacket with veil. The domed veil gives me room to wear a baseball cap and it moves where I want it move. PLUS you can feel a breeze blowing through it...when there's a breeze....
  12. Bees not cleaning up extracting equipment

So, I extracted a few deep frames over the weekend to help alleviate back filling issues with a couple of my hives (only 4 frames). I put the extractor and other equipment out for the girls to clean...
  13. Re: 5 weeks since package installation -- don't see any eggs or larvae

I'd be searching for a mated queen to introduce into this hive.

    Re: Cost of Honey?

    Brad, It's all about the market(ing). :)

I have a customer that sells my honey in his shop and he's getting $20 a pound for it because I put it in glass honey bear jars and tie a label on with hay...

    Re: Cost of Honey?

I'm getting $10 a pound and I can't keep it. My wife sold some the other day for $12 and the lady came back the next day wanting to know if I had anymore.

A pound of honey is equivalent to 12...

Re: Combine or ? Could use advice please

I made three splits earlier this spring too and NONE of them made a successful queen. I ended up combining them with other swarms that I caught to give them a bigger boost. If you're flow predictions...

Re: Harvesting Honey from frame with pollen

They might not cap the remaining if it's in the brood chamber. Are they backfilling? Could be the reason for the swarming. Might want to consider putting that frame into the new swarm hive. It's...

    Re: Backfilling Problem

I had the same thing happen to me last weekend. My best producing hive swarmed because of the back filling. I have 3 supers on it and they're filling those too. Not sure why they do it. I had to...

    Re: Stapler

I use 1" staples for boxes and frames. Probably wouldn't hurt to use 1 1/4" for the boxes but I use plenty of glue too.
  20. Re: How long will 1:1 feeding solution last before going bad

I add one to two tablespoons of Apple cider vinegar (with the mother) to a gallon of 1:1 sugar water. No spoilage and they love it (for some reason). The acid in the vinegar keeps it from spoiling...

    Re: 1 deep + 1 medium

I've never really dealt with packages before as my bees are from nucs...or swarms (which I guess you could compare to a package). Anyway, lots of southern beeks run a single deep and medium. It boils...

    Re: 1 deep + 1 medium

Where you are located it would probably be better to run either 3 mediums or 2 deeps, as they will appreciate the additional honey stores in the winter. Down south where I am, we can usually get away...
  24. Re: How often and how deep to inspect during flow?
