  2. Re: Introduced queen to nuc but queen cells are starting to form

I did my first queen introductions at the beginning of July. 5 Buckfast queens from Canada. Didn't get any notification that they had shipped. So they arrived at my door after 4 days in the mail. I...

    Re: Scared to move foundationless

Did you get about a dozen swarms from calls or traps?

Calls. I didn't do traps this year. Didn't have time for traps with all the swarm calls. Just swarms and cutouts. Facebook, Craigslist,...

    Re: Scared to move foundationless

I'm about 120 miles north of you near Hannibal. We're still in a flow. But the heat is taking a toll on the forage.

I hustled and got about a dozen swarms 8-10 weeks ago. All my swarms have built...

Re: My first swarm capture, exhiliarating!

Congrats on swarm catch! I always find it helpful to give the bees a verbal 5 minute warning before leaving so they can get into the box. Then another at 2 mins. That way they know what you're...

Re: Expectations for hive in first few days

I'm convinced that the best thing new beekeeper can do is to take a deep breath. The rhythm of beekeeping is a slow one.

    1. If there is forage to work, the bees will work it regardless of amount...

5/3 Eolia, MO Medium swarm size
5/3 Baylis, IL (Across the River) Medium size

Both were within 50' of their originating hive.
  13. Re: Rainy weather expected for the next week - should I feed?

I'd be leery feeding a swarm small enough to fit in a 5-frame nuc. Now that they're in a 8-frame deep with more space, it'll be harder for them to protect their hive from the robbing that could ensue.

    Re: Foundation verses Foundationless super

Clarification: You have 3 nucs that you installed (into deeps?) and then in 2 weeks you went to double deeps? And now you are ready to put on medium supers 10 days later?

    I've never seen a nuc...
