Re: Temps inside the hive !!

It was 20 degrees and windy in South East Michigan this morning. I stuck a probe thermometer in the vent hole of one of my double deep Nucs and was more than a little amazed at the 95 degree reading....

    Re: Cleaning Leather Gloves

I use D&L waterless hand cleaner. Put the gloves on and work the hand cleaner in good, then use a damp washcloth to clean off the residue. It won't remove the stains but they will no longer be sticky.

    Re: Who needs Botox?

No brick or weight on top of the lids. There is (was) a large windbreak but it is the tree that blew down. During the winter, I use straps.

    Re: Who needs Botox?

Well, here's the story. I was awakened about 5:30 AM to the sound of a tornado ripping through the neighborhood. The house immediately behind me lost a roof and a HUGE maple tree was torn out of the...

    Re: my honey has turned

I've made my own recipe of Honey Shine for the past 20 years. Perfect use for Goldenrod honey. I call it my bee sting remedy. Kind of like " Hair of the Bee". I drink a bit every time Iget stung....
  7. Re: Getting new queen, can I put old queen and make a split?

You could be setting yourself up for trouble by attempting to replace your queen this late in the season. There is no guarantee that she will be accepted and if not, the colony will likely face the...

Re: Some bees crawling in grass in front of hive

Did you receive any information regarding what an acceptable level is for Varroa using the #mites/100 bees scale?
  9. Re: What to do with old frames full of honey?

Before allowing your hives to rob the honey, I would make sure that your existing hives have the available comb to store 10 or more frames of robbed honey. You could wind up with two honey- bound...

    Re: comb production

The website description gives the I.D. as 4.9mm. It makes sense that the walls are thicker when you consider the complexity of the manufacturing process. I am frankly amazed that it can be done with...

    Plastic Outer Covers

What are your opinions of plastic outer covers? I have used the traditional metal-clad covers since the 1970's and wound up with 2 plastic covers through a package "complete hive" purchase. I have...

  14. Re: Can anybody please identify this bee or insect for me.

Funny story...I was fishing on the St. Clair River a few weeks ago and one of those things kept landing on the yellow & black plastic buckle of my sandals. At first, I thought it was a tired bumble...

    Queen Cell Size Variances

I am interested in the forum members' experience with the relationship between queen cell size and the quality of the queen. In my experience, I have seen quite a variance in the size of supersedure...
  17. Re: super slow motion educational bee film 2 mins long please watch

Thank you so much Mike! Your video revealed some intimate views of the bees that I have never seen. As a pilot, I loved the view of the worker " dropping the gear" before landing.

Re: Is my queen a dud? What to do?

Mike, it unfortunately sounds like you are left with a laying worker and no way for your bees to produce a new queen. To make matters worse, your bees are getting a bit "long in the tooth" and may...

    Re: Cockroaches

I have been noticing a lot of earwigs under the top covers lately. If I knock one through the center hole of the inner cover, it's not long before it comes out the entrance in the jaws of a worker.

    Comb Too Old?

Is it possible for comb to become too old or too used for the queen to want to lay in it? I have a number of frames that originally came with nucs. It is apparent that they have been in use for some...

    Hello From Rochester Hills, Michigan

I started beekeeping as a Boy Scout merit badge effort in Lake County Ohio during the 1970's. I had a wonderful mentor who was in his 70's and spared no effort or love to get me started. I fondly...
