Here in north TN (Springfield, TN) the flow has been strong for some time already. It appears to me that we are about 4 weeks ahead of schedule. My best hive is in double deep brood chambers and I...
Welcome...its always a great thing to see another Tennessee beekeeper coming on board. Best wishes on your into to beekeeping. I'm sure there are some good local beekeepers in Cookeville to help...
Welcome fellow Tennessee beekeeper! Check out the TN Beekeepers Association online and especially the educational papers available for you to read there. Best wishes for the coming New Year!
Nice pics Barry. Is this a mead or an ale? I have several one gallon batches of mead brewing right now, some in primary and some in secondary. Now...just need patience! :)
I don't remember where this recipe came from and I have not tried it yet. All my honey here in middle Tennessee is Wildflower variety. I may use my own honey instead of the Orange Blossom Honey and...
I use inexpensive "Spring Water" that can be purchased at the grocery in gallon jugs. I like the taste and it seems to work just fine.
I generally do so when I have 7 or 8 frames drawn and covered with bees. If you add a second deep hive body of foundation, there needs to be a nectar flow on OR you will need to feed them to draw...
I agree...requeen that hive if they are too testy.
Always good to have another TN beekeeper...best wishes from the Springfield, TN area. The folks you mentioned you are getting bees and equipment from are good folks. Again, best wishes.
I plan to be there!
Good for you...have fun getting it assembled and even more fun with the bees that you house in that hive. God bless!
You'll probably be ok.
Around here folks start to add honey supers about mid April. Entrance reducers can be removed a bit before that.
Could also be a skunk!
Well, I am not from East TN but I am in the state. Welcome and enjoy!
Fred
Springfield, TN
Welcome and enjoy the bees!

Yep! And seems winter bees venom is a bit more "stout" than summer bee stings!
Sometimes sign of a skunk if the parts look chewed up and spit out.
Glad you bee with us!
I used a 4 lb package to start a new hive on undrawn foundation. I felt that they drew foundation faster or better than some 3 lb packages I have used. Just one personal observation. That said,...
Welcome! I met Dave at Long Lane when I was teaching a class at HAS last year at TN Tech University. Nice guy! I trust he has you off to a good start with your bees. Best wishes from Tennessee!
I use 2 pressure treated 4x4 landscape timbers set on top of a concrete block on each end. Works good for me. And this set up will hold two or three hives or more depending on the length of the...
Welcome! I live in TN but have kinfolk in Thonotosassa, near Plant City. Lots of orange trees around! You ought to be able to get some good honey in your area. Best wishes to you.
Fred
Bees need to take "cleansing flights" when the temps moderate a bit. What you are seeing is normal. I would not recommend opening up a hive when temps are cold unless for emergency feeding. If...
