Did an inspection of my hives today. One hive had swarmed, and two others that have swarm cell's built, I split them and wished that I had checked my hives 4 or 5 days sooner.
When is the proper time to "preform" a cutdown split.
I made my first split today. Was wondering when that I should check on it, and what I should look for.
Bought 4 double deep hives yesterday. Got them hauled up the mountain and set up. Really looking forward to this season. Hopefully I'll turn at least a small honey crop his year.
Thanks Rader
The hive is weak (or at least weaker than my other hive) located in full sun (when the sun is shining) deep sandy loam topsoil and since the hive is in East Tennessee this spring it is very very damp.
I live in the mountains of East Tennessee. Fields mixed in with trees everywhere (mostly trees, predominantly oak). I was wondering where would be the best bet to put a swarm trap?
Just finished building and installing a sbb beetle trap, it appears like it will work and it only cost a couple of bucks to make.
Looks like that's what it is, just kind of got jumpy when I saw a lot of beetles not much brood and no queen. Checked one of them again this morning while I put a beetle trap on and found the queen.
I have 2 hives that I started from nucs last year. There seems to be a reasonable amount of bees in both hives but there isn't much brood, can't find any eggs or the queen in eather hive. Should I be...
Is there an amount of beetles where that it just becomes hopeless for a hive to combat. I have a hive that has loads of them, just wondering if it is a lost cause.
I have a hive that is full of shb. Just wondering what kind of traps ya'll use. Also what kind you can build yourself.
Thanks, Isaac
Anything that you recomend doing about the hive beetles?
When I started my hives last year I went treatment free and foundationless, mainly to save money:) but anyway I have a hive that overwintered in a double deep. I just did a spring inspection which...
I agree with you on this one, got burned myself once when I paid in full, it's been 3 years and still nothing.
This is my second year beekeeping, I started with 4 nucs last spring and lost 2 to wax moths during the summer. I just inspected my 2 surviving hives for the first time since early last fall, in one...
Thanks Wolfer, that sounds like a good rule of thumb.
I don't know about nectar, but their bringing in pollen.
This is probably a stupid question, but hey, this is only my second year so stupid questions are allowed:) How do you check on this?
I use burlap, we have tons of it (literally) that we hauled from a local coffee roaster.
If i was trying to make a queenless split, would the split raise a queen above the double screen of a queen right hive?
If I was to make a split, would it hurt them to have night time freezing temperatures for the first week or two?
I'm in zone 7
I am new to beekeeping, and have a good hive that has made it through the winter that I would like to try splitting. What I was wondering is, when could I realistically expect to have drones ready...
