    Re: Apiary Registration

I don't know KY laws. I don't register or have my hives inspected. I hope it stays this way. There are local laws in some jurisdictions, if hives are allowed, quanitity, distances from houses or...

    Re: Remote Hives

Pretty common. I have hives on 2 folks properties. Folks contact our club looking for beekeepers to put hives on their property Typically the homeowners would like just a little honey in return.

    Re: Adding Sugar Blocks

Go by weight, honey weight. Don't feed unless they need it. Around here all you need is 25-60lbs depending on size. The critical time to check stores is in February/March when they start brooding...
  6. Re: Help getting through the remainder of winter.

weigh the hive if possible. Your looking for atleast 15 lbs, feed with dry sugar
  7. Re: check before you assemble - if you ordered Walter Kelly medium super hive body

Give them a call. They'll make it right. What type of frames are you putting into the boxes.

The sale of the business was more or less high level. The people in the shop, the store are still...
  8. Re: When to add 2nd brood box for spring buildup?

Depends on cluster size, how many open frames and blank foundation. I typically move 1 or 2 combs up based on strength of cluster. Timing is end of April thru May here.

I may bring in a 5 and 6 frame nuc tomorrow night. The real cold doesn't hit us until wednesday.
  10. Re: Anyone modify Kelley screened bottom boards?

A 3/8" thick c-shaped shim will work no problem. You could also try removing lowest bar on the back of the hive stand and sliding your vaporizer in where the inspection board is inserted below the...

    Re: Ants

The little sugar ants are not much of a concern, yes they will eat some honey. The bees will bite and kill them. If alot of ants are visiting a particular hive that could be a sign of weekness.

    Re: Arkansas small bodied bees?

What your probably talking about is "small cell". So yes they are fairly common and most people know about them. The idea is to allow bees to build their own cell size naturally without foundation....

    Re: strapping hives down

The wind can blow them over, light tall hives. Straps are overkill but may be necessary in some environments. I place a brick or rock ontop of each hive. I've never had a hive blown over or lost...

    Re: Still Producing wax....Really?

hey thanks for info. Not a big fan of dry sugar, i fed plenty of syrup in fall and making bricks is just one more thing I wouldn't see much benefit vs time. The moisture problem was from a...

    Re: Frame question

Unfortunately that doesn't always happen. Better to remove possible hiding spots.

Even if the slots are filled the beetles/moths will burrow tunnels into the wax and propolis. Stay away from...

I should have taken a picture, but yes I am sure they are not from cappings. They are clear wax scales, those that are secreted from the bee. After feeding its typically to see on the inspection...

    Re: Hopkins method question

I would try grafting with a chinese tool into jzbz cups. Put those grafts in the center cluster of a strong queenless hive. Its really not that hard if you have a decent eye and steady hand.

Re: Plastic or wax for a new hive?

Plastic is what I buy, main reason is I was tired of crosswiring wax foundation to stop it from bowing. Plastic is more durable and easier to install. I really like kelleys sgx style frames for...

I prefer the SGX style. The slotted top bars are nice for assembly but thats just about it, the slots are good hiding spots for wax moth and shb. Kelley actually owns a patent on this design,...
