Re: Rearing queens for a small operation

I think there was much more to Mel's OTS book/method than just raising queens. As I read it he focused on queens to get you started on "outbreeding mites", making more bees or honey to sell and...

Re: Eco Wood Treatment: Who Has Experience?

I have used it for about 4-5 years. It is great. Very easy to apply. I just use a roller on the outside of the boxes. Some people fill a plastic tub and dip the whole box into it. When I started...

Re: anybody used valley bee supply?

I deal with them a lot. They manufacturer their own woodenware. I have always been pleased with their quality in workmanship and service. Nice people to deal with.

    Re: Bucket-O-Bees

Congratulations!! Now you are a beekeeper and will become (if not already) infatuated with them-lot's of adventures ahead. I guess you already knew that from your parents. Good luck!!

    Re: Fastest way to increase

It might be a good idea to run your plan by some experienced beeks in your locale. I think it would be helpful to join the Upper Midwest group here on Beesource (I think there is one). Check under...

Re: Feeding feral bees for a future trapout

Last Spring I had a swarm take up residence in a stack of boxes which were all misaligned with frames tossed in them every which way that I had left outside my apiary fence. A bottom board was on top...

    Re: Bucket-O-Bees

I do not know anything about your area, so I guess swarms are possible at this time of year, but I wouldn't think with all that drawn comb and some brood that you are putting in that the bees are...

    Re: Bucket-O-Bees

Sounds like a good plan. I guess you mean an entrance reducer-just use a piece of 1x or 2x or the like cut to leave the bees an inch or two for ingress/egress.

    Re: Bucket-O-Bees

I think odfrank is right. I would make a round cover for the bucket (cardboard would work) with a say 3-4" hole in the center. Put that on the bucket tape it down as tight as possible. Put a hive box...

    Re: Lets talk labels

I second AstroBee. Amy did my labels, she is easy to work with and she is a "bee person", which counts with me. Seems like a very nice lady and she has an artist's eye for detail.

Re: Scarifying goldenrod and aster seed.

Nature has it's own way of doing this, depending on how you stored them after harvesting the seed heads, you might consider just frost seeding in your area I would think in late February-early March....

    Re: Best Carniolan Queens

I ordered 2 from him for 05/11/2015 a week or 10 days ago. I got a confirmation from Dawn and a query as to how I want them shipped, but since then his email has been down.

    Re: When do bears attack?

Absolutely!! I see them around my place mostly in the late spring/summer. They say it is the honey smell that they can pick up for miles.
