  1. Re: Please help with frame by frame hive inspection - link to pictures

Good eyes to note the queen cell,

It is probably a good idea to wait until this hive has eight of the frames pulled out and filled. If it were me, I would not add a super at this time. Since...
  2. Re: Please help with frame by frame hive inspection - link to pictures

Looks like your hive is building up. Lots of brood, but really no stores. It might not be a bad idea to feed this hive until they a few frames of stores built up.

  3. Re: Swarm returned to hive, what to do next?

Could you possibly split that hive in the morning? It may be to late, but I would try a split.

All of my hives are foundationless. The few times I have moved hives, we had no problems.

Re: Bunch of questions from a worried newbee

Flowerplanter has some good advice. To split a small nuc now is probably going to doom both colonies.

We installed a package for my friend a few weeks ago. Shortly after the new queen started...

  7. Re: 2nd yr BK needs help!!! Hives are all swarming

+1 on this advice. When we make splits we move three frames with the new split.

  8. Re: Any advice to a new beekeeper-splitting hives

Concentrate on frames you would expect the queen to be on. IE glance over frames of honey, she probably won't be on frames of capped brood. Don't look at each bee, look for the pattern of her long...
  9. Re: Any advice to a new beekeeper-splitting hives

Like Rader said, Michael Bush has some great info. I would add, find an experienced splitter. They can get you pointed on the right track.

For my splits, I wait until the bees put eggs in the...

    Re: Split not foraging

    Thanks everyone,

Came home at lunch and they where still not foraging. Came home after work and that split was very busy foraging. They were bringing in pollen as well.

    Since robbing has...

    Re: swarm cell?

If they are going to swarm, they typically backfill the broodnest with honey. If it were my hive, I would check the broodnest. If the broodnest is full of nectar/honey, chances are they are getting...

    Split not foraging

One of my splits is loaded with bees, but is not foraging. This split was made four days ago. We put the queen, two medium frames of honey and four frames of capped brood in an eight frame medium...

Re: Advice on if my queen is still present.

My bees came from swarms, nucs and splits, so my experience with packages is limited. Earlier this year, we installed a package for a friend. These bees went on drawn comb. So they had a huge head...
  15. Re: When to perform split after seeing swarm cells?

Really, just the type of split. I like to make nucs. You are planning an even split. Both are fine. Like Jon, when I find a queen cell with an egg, I split then.

    Shane
  16. Re: When to perform split after seeing swarm cells?

It is best to split now. If you wait until they are capped it is too late. It might be best to put the old queen in a nuc. Otherwise, they may swarm anyways, at this point.

  23. Re: What should I do? New package & Supercedure Cell

I don't have a lot of experience with packages,

But the few I do, it seems they always supercede, and fairly quickly. Bluegrass had some good advice. In this case, I would leave the queen cell...
  24. Re: How often do you inspect your hives? And do you smoke during inspection?

The time of the year dictates how often I inspect our hives. During swarm season I check every seven days, unless there is bad weather. Other times of the year it varies. For example, during our...
  25. Re: To feed or not to feed, that is the question.

Good question, with several answers. In the spring, I feed only until they have some capped stores.

    Entrance feeders can cause robbing.

When you did the cutout, did you get the queen?
