    Re: My DIY OA Vaporizer!

This is the scary part to me. We have folks who're experimenting with a compound that is very dangerous. And....they haven't even investigated the safety beforehand.
'I did not breathe right that...

    Re: My DIY OA Vaporizer!

And even that might not be safe. I've seen sudden shifts in wind when OAV treating. As I'm standing a few feet away, I generally have time to shift my position. I've gotten a whiff once...such a...

Re: Against all odds, nuc is alive

I think the challenges balance. For example...the northerners get a pretty decent winter brood break, which should help reduce the mite load. Many of us southerners get little or, as is often my...

It seems a little premature to me. Come back and tell us about it in April.

As a fellow who has neither need nor desire for such a thing.....I suppose I shouldn't be surprised that I'd overlooked it. :)

Goes to show. I've never heard the term quad or quad runner used for a vehicle. 4 wheeler or ATV yep.

    What is a quad battery?
  8. Re: Marin Bee Survey: Hobby keepers - a net population sink

Again....considering the possibility that these are predominantly inexperienced beekeepers using ineffective timing or applications. I'd be sick if I lost thirty percent.

At least the only way you've kept them in check. Mine are in check....and I don't use screened bottoms with oil pans. Just pointing out that there's more than one way......

    Re: hive beetles

Although a pleasurable pastime, on hives heavily infested....it won't make a measurable difference.
  11. Re: Marin Bee Survey: Hobby keepers - a net population sink

Not necessarily. Might be the new beekeepers who treat fail to do so in a timely fashion. It would be interesting to look at losses based on number of years beekeeping. I'm betting the folks with 5+...

Were there no small cell reporting beekeepers?

    Re: Battery life with OAV

For anyone doing OAV on a regular basis....or doing a large number of treatments, this seems like the best solution, in my opinion.

    Re: Battery life with OAV

My point exactly. I'm offering a sense of how much battery is needed to do OAV treatments. I'm not trying to educate anyone into the intricacies of circuit analysis....nor trying to convince anyone...

    Re: Battery life with OAV

Your battery may be 'worn out'.
Your vaporizer may be consuming a huge amount of energy....not likely, as it would overheat pretty quickly.
Small gauge wire and/or an excessively long wire going...

    Re: Battery life with OAV

Unless I'm sadly mistaken it would indicate how the battery was performing over time. Using the measurement at the first treatment as the baseline and watching the decay as I progressed.

    Re: Battery life with OAV

I got in another 22 this am. After 3 minutes of power there was a thin layer of black on the bottom of the tray in the last 2. My only point in all of this is to offset the posts that have been made...
  18. Re: Oxalic Acid Vaporizer Results - Users post here!

I have no idea which are which. Mine is a Heilsyer JB200. I haven't noticed any ill effects. I do wonder if the shock might shorten the life of the glowplug....but will have to see.

And...adding to Oldtimer's question.....did the inspector point out anything in particular to support his contention that it was mites?

    Re: Battery life with OAV

I carry a pail of water and dip the head in between treatments. Then I use an old toothbrush to clean out any dead bees or junk so it doesn't accumulate.

That may be ok but sounds a bit dangerous. As a young fellow working on cars, I saw batteries explode under similar conditions. Although that was eons ago and I'm sure they're better designed...

    Re: Battery life with OAV

The CCA is 275 above 32 degrees. 12V. Pretty much a standard battery for a riding mower. I've read where folks used one and were only able to treat three or four hives between charges. I knew I had...

    Battery life with OAV

I've seen comments about battery life when using an OA vaporizer and some seemed much shorter than I've experience, so I thought I'd test more carefully this year. I have one of the Canadian units...
