Re: Confused re protocols for mixing bees

drlonzo is right about some of those old sayings. I too have made may splits using different hives with no problems. What I have done that has worked well for me is, if it's needed, I put 2 drops of...

    Re: Newbee questions

Add the extra bars between perfectly drawn frames of brood. This will give you a much better chance of getting straight combs. You can also add 1 between the broad and honey.
  6. Re: Photographs from 3rd Inspection, May 31st, Day 38 - Is that a Queen Cup?

Sometimes but generally no. If the decision to swarm has already been made by the colony removing the cups won't help. Better to closely manage hive so as to prevent swarming. Lots of drones during...

Re: Sugar shake for varroa mites

Sugar shake is fine if it's needed. First need to take a mite count by putting a cup full of bees from the brood area in a qt jar with some powdered sugar and a wire mesh top. Shake them around good...

Re: Would you send it back?

I'm going to agree with sfisher on this one. I have been buying from BM for 9 years now & have not had any problems. They are good folks & I think if you let them know they will make it right. Like...
  9. Re: Can someone explain to me how the bars in a Warre work?

Not an "idiotic" question at all! Frame spacing is just as important in a Warre as any other hive. I have seen some drill holes through the ends of the bars & use smaller screws to hold bars in...

Re: Where can I order a queen ASAP

Was at Kelleys yesterday. They said they have no queens at this time. Try Johnny, Broke-T. Find his info in for sale section.

Re: Burr comb on inner cover

Lots of ways to do it. I keep either a roll of very thin wire or an old guitar string in my tool box. Puff some smoke under cover and then lift cover up just enough to get wire in and use it like a...

    Re: Extractors

I have owned the Brushy Mt 9 frame "manual" extractor for 6 years. Works great but will kill you extracting large numbers. I wish I had bought the motorized version but I didn't. That being said they...

Re: A successful TBH in-hive feeder design

Don't use the lids that come with the jars unless you are using a larger size wire. The top is slightly recessed and the bees can't get to feed. Easy fix, use a flat lid. Looks good.
  17. Re: Capped queen cups in recently installed package

Could possibly be honey bound, queen not having room enough to lay. What does the volume of bees look like, how many frames do they cover? You may have to consider splitting or at least opening the...

  21. Re: suggestions for processing a bar or 2 of honey via crush and strain

Set in outside in the sun until it drains completely. That's what I do. Works quite well. Just remember to have everything sealed up good or it will be back in your hives. If you need smaller buckets...

    Re: What to do?

They will need water. Put a drop or two on the screen. Touch the screen, don't drag your finger across. Do this about 2 or 3 times a day. They should be fine.

    Re: 8-frame loose fit

Re: I think we're barking up the wrong tree,

I have to agree with WLC. All those live, treatment free bees flying in & out of my hives with supers nearly full of capped honey don't mean a thing. And since they mean nothing, I can't prove a...
