    SHB in central Indiana

Just saw them recently. How many others are seeing them? It's said they must burrow into the ground as part of their life cycle. My 4 hives are sitting on a concrete slab. Will that help control...

How much honey to leave in a drought?

We've only had 1/10" or so of rain in the last 2 months. I'm thinking of checking the hives and take some if they have any in the supers. Would you be comfortable leaving them 2 deeps well filled? ...

Re: kamikazi bees and air conditioner

How large a piece of wire do you need? I live in Johnson Co. and have some 1/8' wire if we can figure out how to get it to you. Will depend on how much you need.

    Re: A swarm question

Riverratbees, please explain 'mating ball'. Don't know if this applies to that or not but I did see a ball of bees on the landing of a hive that was a medium size swarm in April.

    A swarm question

I had a swarm come out about 4 days ago about 2 hrs. before sun down. Finally found them; maybe a double hand full. I thought it must be some that got lost or the full swarm did not come out. I put...

    Some advice please

My G'son asked for advice on removing a swarm in a friend's garage. They cut out a section of plywood on the outside. They have fairly well filled a space between studs about 3 to 4 tall and wide...

Sticky: Re: Please Post your Swarm Dates?

First swarm today, medium size. They settled in a bush about a foot from the ground. Tough job! Dumped them in a plastic storage box. Dark when I got them home so I'll leave them until morning. About...

Re: Alternative to pine needles as smoker fuel

Theriverhawk and CCar 2000, I read on here a year or two ago that corn cobs could kill bees. Have you found that to be wrong? I have plenty of cobs but was afraid to use them.

Re: 2 questions if I may

If I can figure out how, I'll post a picture in a few days. A laying worker may be a good guess. They didn't starve as they had 2 supers plus of honey. I wanted to get thru the other 2 while the...

Re: 2 questions if I may

The white material was not and it was too white for crystalized honey. It was all together in a section of the comb more like brood would be. I wondered if the hive was getting weaker and weaker and...

    2 questions if I may

    1. We were 60 today so I went thru the hives. One of 4 had died (2+ supers of honey; lost the queen I guess). Several frames had a glistening white substance in a lot of the cells. Is that just...

    Re: Moving bees

New question on the 2 mile thing. Do the bees just see that their location is new and need to re-orient or do they recognize that they have been moved? If the latter, couldn't you just drive around...

    Re: Pollen and honey

Thanks for the replies. This was above a shallow, deep and about 2 or 3 shallows. This hive has been booming so maybe they needed that much brood space. It is a testimony to Walt's CB system. It was...

Re: How much honey does a colony need?

beecuz; I've found that a thick shallow frame has about a quart or 3 lbs. of honey. So a medium frame would probably be between 3 and 4 lbs. or 35 to 40 lbs. in a 10 frame medium.

The Soap Pixie; If by 'frame grabber' you mean what Brushy Mtn. calls a 'frame grip', I have one that I like real well. It makes picking up the frame from the hive easier and it leaves one hand free....
