  1. Re: Lost a hive - evidence doesn't point to any disease I read about.

No, I haven't. I thought that it might also be a problem, but don't know. Up until now, I have not lost a hive, even though I've only had 3 at one time. I haven't even had a weak one. It may be...
  2. Re: Lost a hive - evidence doesn't point to any disease I read about.

That is good to know, though mine still had a lot of liquid remaining in the cells. There was a fair amount of honey still left, but it was on one side. I noticed the pile of dead bees was on the...

No, none that fit that description.
  4. Re: Lost a hive - evidence doesn't point to any disease I read about.

This substance is snow white. Is granulated honey snow white? Like I said in my original post, there was almost no capped brood anywhere, at least no more than a few. These few seems to have...

This is the best I could come up with, but it's not accurate for color. The flash caused everything to look very yellowish. The substance in the cells is snow white.

  6. Lost a hive - evidence doesn't point to any disease I read about.

I've been keeping a few hives for about 5 years and lost my first one this spring. It came out of our very long winter weak, but still had activity. Over the last week or so, the activity fell...

    Re: dado blades

If you want, you can buy a 6" dado. It will weight less and cost less than a comparable 8" set. You only have to be able to raise it above the top of the table by the depth of the cut.

Re: Still No Honey in NY

Lloyd, do the asters produce lower quality honey?
  9. Re: How many bees could a beekeep keep if a beekeep could keep bees??

Another alternative for a strong, quick-to-build joint is the one I use - a biscuit joint. A biscuit joiner and liberal amounts of glue and a couple minutes per box. The hardwood biscuit make for a...

    Re: moveing hive

I was under the impression that all you had to do was re-orient them by putting a branch in front of the entrance to make them realize things were different. I have to move one a mile next week and...
  11. Re: How many bees could a beekeep keep if a beekeep could keep bees??

Some guys are stressed by 40 hour weeks. Others have energy to spare after putting in 120 per week. I'm betting you're closer to the latter category. One thing I've learned in life is that some can...
  12. Re: What would make a newly purchased Italian queen so dark??

Sounds like if I get the Russian queens from a registered breeder who is also a board member of the association (and who happens to be only a few miles from me) I'd be pretty safe in getting bees...
  13. Re: What would make a newly purchased Italian queen so dark??

How about a Russian, bought from one of the members of the Russian Bee Breeders Association? It appears they are making a great effort to keep the lines pure.

Re: Wild hive - how do I capture it?

I moved it with no problem. The box is made out of some kind of fiber board and is about the size of a hive body. I just slipped a plastic bag over it and moved them into my truck. The bees didn't...

Re: two kinds of bees in my yard

I don't follow how the natural swarm would be any better genetically. I was under the impression that all natural swarms were very recently in the possession of a beekeeper. I thought disease and...

Great video. That pretty much clears up any questions I had on attaching the comb to a frame. Thanks,

Re: Wild hive - how do I capture it?

Thanks for the advise mudmallet. I was thinking of setting up the new hive body right next to their box and then putting syrup in it to attract them to the box before I attempted to move them over. ...

Wild hive - how do I capture it?

I found a hive of bees that are in a box sitting on the porch of an unoccupied house. I'm not sure what the box is made of and did not attempt to open it. I've captured a few swarms before, but I've...

    Re: Reasonable Shipping Costs?

My own experience has shown that explanations don't do much. They either see it as a good deal or they don't, when comparing my price to a competitor's. The way a small business can combat the large...

I thought I should also add, the price a company charges for shipping is completely irrelevant. They only thing that matters is the total cost of the product and shipping combined, compared to the...

    Re: Surviving the mating flight

Sure, that is very possible, but shouldn't one of the queen cells worked or isn't it likely that they would have raised another queen from the frame of brood? I'm wondering if the queen didn't make...

    Surviving the mating flight

I've been keeping bees for 2 years. This year I had a swarm from one of my hives, which I caught, and a wild swarm that I also caught. When I hived them, I added a couple frames of brood with some...

I own a company that ships quite a bit and have learned a lot about how shippers work. I also have to make the decision on how to price shipping. Every company has to decide whether to have the...
