  1. Re: Garden border for a raised garden. (Chemicals in wood)

Don't they sell landscape rock or edging at the local lawn and garden stores in Fl? Cedar is natural and has it own built in rot protection. Most lawn and garden places offer some plastic edging...

    Re: Gloves Make The Difference!

They have not made it thru yet. But they seem to go for the pebbled blue rubber and not the nylon. The pair I have has a thicker double layer nylon on the top of the hand. There are some gloves...

    Re: Crepe Myrtle Nectar?

I would think hybrids are developed to not produce seeds to spread them all around. They may not produce an attractive flower that draws a pollinator. Just a guess though.

    Re: Mason Bee condo experiment

They seem to be attracted to my hives this year. But the girls won't put up with them. I watched them bring down a couple the other day.

Re: How do i know my bees are happy?

You have to take your veil off and look them square in the eye. If they are smiling they are happy. Anything else is just normal
  7. Re: Bees dying at entrance with pollen on their legs...

If the weather is chilly, the bees will get chilled on way back to hive and very tired. They may not have enough strength to get into the hive and revive. They would probably explain the ones on...

    Re: Gloves Make The Difference!

Found another pair of gloves today like the ones I was using, but a little cheaper.

Any suggestions to get rid of that itch after the sting? It is alot worse than the initial pain.
  9. Re: Dumbest thing you ever bought for beekeeping?

I forgot the bee brush. Expensive brush that I use to sweep the stuff off my work bench now. I bought one of them frame spacer things with a handle, it seems pretty worthless.

    Re: Mowing by bees??

Mine seem a little scared when the mower passes by. But things were getting wooly around them so I suited up and fired up the push mower and trimmed the bee yard. Several head butts to the screen,...
  14. Re: Dumbest thing you ever bought for beekeeping?

Someone else's trouble hive. Ridden with shb, wild comb, and a lazy queen. And it even had a sbb.

In retrospect, I should have seen the signs when he said he was going to try a top bar hive and...

    Re: Is beekeeping always frustrating?

Not to mention, they are live little insects with a mind and organization of their own. They usually have sense enough to do what needs to be done in the hive, even if we don't.

Re: Bees are blackened, look burned ?

Could be robber bees that have been out robbing other hives. Or just some that have been in a community feeder. They look slick, dark, and somewhat greasy as they have lost the fuzz or have it...

Re: I Thought My Queen Was Loose.

I never went back in to look. But she is in there somewhere, almost every frame drawn out was full of brood or capped brood. No queen cells.

    Re: Strawberries

I have not noticed any on my beds. But lots of blooms and lots of berries set. Looks like a good year for strawberries.

    Gloves Make The Difference!

Last summer, I had a timid hive of Italians and could work them smokeless with bare hands.

This year, 2 new hives with a Carnolian/Italian mix, a darker breed of bee. They have alot more spunk. ...

I Thought My Queen Was Loose.

Worked my hives over this afternoon. What started out as a sunny warm day turned to cloudy by the time I got off work. Temps were still in upper 70's.

My last inspection showed they were both...

Re: Large coffee urn as wax melter?

I just bought a cheap 2 quart crock pot at Wally World last week and melted several pounds of wax for coating pierco foundation. It worked well, just have to chunk up the wax and stir often.

    Re: Ask a Treatment-Free Beekeeper a Question!

I am seeing that one already. I installed 2 nucs this spring, one in an 8 frame hive and the other in a 10 frame hive. The 8 frame is filled to capacity with 2 deeps now and the 10 frame is still...
  25. Re: Feeding multiple hives from common location

Kelley Bees has one for sale on their website. Pretty neat design and easy to build if you are a do it yourself kind of person. Basically a bank of jar feeders with a roof.
