    One inch of air space should not be an issue. My hive covers are 1 1/2" larger than the hive boxes so they clear the handles. I use 1 1/2" foil face insulation to make my covers.

    How many hives do you keep? I have given this some thought as well but only keep a couple of hives. Even a small building would be too large for two to four colonies.
