Re: Sable Grafting Brush - Tips Wanted

I buy my brushes from either the local model shop or our beekeeping supplies store.

Just wondering why you are grafting at home and then travelling to your cell raising yard?

    Have you tried...

Re: Sable Grafting Brush - Tips Wanted

Ive tried the white brush only because there was no alternative and I found it VERY difficult to see the larvae on it.

I only use brown bristles now but they do last a long time.

    Re: dead drones

The two reasons that come to mind straight away is theres no flow and stores are low or varroa affecting the drone brood.

    Re: dwindling attendants with queen.

I dont think 2 bees looking after a queen is nearly enough and am surprised the queen was sent with only four attendants, we use a minimum of eight.
You should definitely try to get more attendants...

Re: Sable Grafting Brush - Tips Wanted

Let us know how it goes burns. I would have thought it would be really hard to get the larvae of a brush that flat and wide so i will be interested to hear how it actually works.

Re: Sable Grafting Brush - Tips Wanted

I always use a damp tea towel to cover the grafts as they are done.

I graft 3 bars of 20 before and walk out the back door to the starters that are around 50 metres away.

    I would always cover...
  10. Re: Brown Fecal spots from new packaged bees

The packages are generally made up of bees from different hives its only the queen that will be the specific breed you asked for.
I think the bees after being stuck in a package for so long are just...

Re: Sable Grafting Brush - Tips Wanted

I use 000 as i find 00 too big and its possibly why you have trouble rolling the larvae off.

If you can get your hands on a 000 give it a go and see if it makes a difference I think it probably...

Re: Treatment free with a single hive?

Nick, Roy is treatment free but you should ask him how many actually survive.

The thing with being treatment free in NZ at this time is that it wont work with a single colony.

    The only way I...

Re: Treatment free with a single hive?

I wouldn't jump to the conclusion that all their bees are at 80% they might have one hive at 80% they are breeding from dosn't mean the daughters are 80%.

Also the queens they sell are open mated...

I dont think demand is particularly high,

I wouldn't hold my breath for anything special or different to the bees you have now
  20. Re: How many queens can one person catch per day?

    I'm with Oldtimer 100%.

picking queens is the easy part of the operation and absolutely no indication of how many nucs you can run.
