Re: Source of Late Fall Varroa Load

I'm guessing that the logical conclusion to this is that any bee tree is a threat to beekeepers, and in order to save the bees, the NHB will take the eradication on as a major initiative.
  2. Re: are flying virgin queens always followed by a drone comet?

I haven't spent a lot of time in large breeding yards, but several years ago when visiting Don Fatbeeman, we saw a cluster form in the air and fall to the ground (there were hundreds of nucs in a...

Re: Fischers honey be gone or bee be gone or somesuch

Mark, Jim writes extensively about fancy drinks at fancy bars, has threatened to sue me, my publisher, the organic list, bee-l, and I expect some of the other well known lists/forums. He has lied...
  4. Re: Why are there still so many drones in one hive?

If you see significantly more drones than you think could have emerged in the hive, check carefully for queen cells and/or a virgin queen.

Re: WHOOO HOOOO No more mowing!!!

We had a conference attendee who was in trouble with their town...the grass was too long. They figured out that the lawn statute only applied to grass....they got around the statute because there...

Re: Fischers honey be gone or bee be gone or somesuch

Considering who makes the stuff, it might work better if you add a $30 cocktail to what comes in the bottle...and threaten to sue the bees if they don't do what you want.

Re: Fischers honey be gone or bee be gone or somesuch

Given that the contents of the bottle are proprietary (you don't know what is in it), burning it in a smoker to harvest honey seems reckless at best. What are you burning and what are the...

Re: Mann Lake rep here on BSource?

These things are easily removable for a reason....it is the part that will need replacing.

I've never liked the thermostats on these things (we have 2 of them), but they are the standard and from...
  10. Re: Cut Out Bees: Abscond while box open waiting for latecomers?

It probably was closer to 30 '....which is about 25' over my limit...but I was up a good 15'....I needed a 20' extension ladder and it was more than half extended.

    Re: mold in the extractor

I would invite the fellow Beek over for a beer...and ask hom/her to clean it when they show up.
  13. Re: Cut Out Bees: Abscond while box open waiting for latecomers?

Oh, if you do this with bees on combs, do not move the combs while the bees are knocked out...you will roll them all.
  14. Re: Cut Out Bees: Abscond while box open waiting for latecomers?

I finished the cutout above today...there were some interesting problems to deal with.....

As you can see, there is a square beam going up the middle of the column....I removed all the comb, but...
  15. Re: Cut Out Bees: Abscond while box open waiting for latecomers?

Depending on the situation, not leaving stragglers (which can sometimes become angry homeless bees) can be important.

About 10 years ago, we had a friend that was moving out west. He had given...

    Cage the queen.
  17. Re: Upset neighbors. Must part with or move my hives.

Move the bees...keep the empty hive number 3 setup and every week light your smoker and put on the suit. If there are complaints about your bees (that you done have) encourage the complainers to...

  19. Re: European Bee health reportedly better than claimed

I think the most misunderstood number is the 'number of hives'.

It is presented by the media (and many if not most beekeepers) as a report of the health of a natural population.
    But the number of...

Re: Do I understand this correctly ?

Generally, the bees will either rework the cells (the reason for notching in the OPS method) or, on fully drawn plastic or comb with lots of cocoons, they float the larvae out of the cell and build a...
