  1. Re: 50F and my gangsta hive was threatening me today

Would like to add, I do not believe aggression equals production. This particular hive could be our consistently best producer, IMO, because they fly in rainy/damp conditions. Which we tend to have...
  2. Re: 50F and my gangsta hive was threatening me today

My best hive the last four years has been one our the more defensive. Defensive bees this time of year would not bother me. If they are overly defensive during a main flow is another concern.

    Re: Bee plant question

We have had good success planting/cultivating a few different plants and trees. The bees really work the redbuds, hawthorns, black locust and persimmon trees we have planted. We have cultivated...

Re: 100 pounds of honey in December??

Saw an ornamental at work in bloom, bees were working it. Don't know what the shrub is. FWIW, some of our hives have uncapped nectar(the few we checked), which is very unusual for this time of...

    Re: No treatment hives

    No offense taken,

You have a valid point. We live in a very mountainous region. Our major flows, with the exception of sourwood and Linden, come early. Since the flows come early the bees have...

    Re: No treatment hives

I have been told this. And it is simply not true. Yes, if you don't treat, some will die. But, even if you treat, some will die. As far as honey production, our TF hives fall in line with the VA...

Re: Too late to combine hives? CT

From a nuc to a packed double deep in a bit over three months would be pretty impressive. If that hive has 10 total frames, I would overwinter in a single deep. What makes you think they will not...

    Fall swarms and overwintering success

Has anyone had success overwintering fall swarms? Had a call today, it was an easy swarm.

Gave them an empty comb and a frame of honey. Will move them to a five frame medium nuc and see what...

    Re: Swarming in Mid-September, seriously?

Got a swarm call today. Fairly small. Gave them an empty frame and a frame of honey.
  11. Re: Need new queen for single backyard hive in Texas

No eggs can certainly be an indicator of queenlessness. But, this time of year in our region some hives will slow/halt brood production.

Re: to take the super or not.

That is what I would do. Pull a frame or two for your table. They will need at least a full medium to overwinter on.

We currently offer 1LB muth jars and quarts by request. The 1LB muth jars are a big hit.

Re: Odd cluster on outside of hive

Shook them into a box, with a piece of comb, yesterday. They were very interested, but did not accept it. Pushed the cover to the front, and the cluster moved to the front. Hopefully they will...

Odd cluster on outside of hive

Went to turn on the bear fence last night, and found this odd cluster of bees on the rear of one hive. This hive is a double deep eight frame. The upper box is for an internal feeder. Any thoughts...

Re: Point of Nuc's and their various forms?

We regularly overwinter five frame nucs. We are a climate 6a. Seems like heresy, but we have a better success rate with the nucs.

  23. Re: First cutout - what to do with bucket full of bees??

A bee vac is always handy. Especially your first cutout and more so for inside cutouts. But not 100% necessary. By strapping the brood into frames and placing the box with brood frames as close as...

It is best to leave supercedure cells alone. The bees know when it is time to replace the queen.
