Re: Lost half of hives and it's not even winter

Thanks for advice and encouragement, I'm not really sure what is causal or symptomatic either. I definitely learned I will never put them among trees again.

Re: Lost half of hives and it's not even winter

I bought 20 hives from packages this spring, some were building up great, some patterns were really spotty. I didn't treat either yard for its this season. I was under the (apparently wrong)...

Re: Lost half of hives and it's not even winter

Man, I guess your right, I just think of 1st year package hives not as being as susceptible, but I don't know why I think that.

Re: Lost half of hives and it's not even winter

Thanks for all responses. So helpful.

None of the hives were slimed but I can easily see 100+ beetles in each hive when I do inspections. My hives in full-sun have less than 10 beetles that I can...

Lost half of hives and it's not even winter

This is my fourth year beekeeping. The past three years I have kept 4-7 hives and they have done really well. This Spring I tried to take a big step forward and expanded to 25 hives. Because I did't...

    Re: Queen Rearing Woes...

Oh man... Well i guess it is fitting that I screwed up my first kiss too. So should I just try to find virgin queens running around and catch them, or just let them work it out?

    sigh...

    Re: Queen Rearing Woes...

You're right. I grafted on the 13th - so it would have been 11 days later. From the picture, do you think they were chewed out a while ago or recently? I thought perhaps because they were building...

    Queen Rearing Woes...

My hope was to do 8 overwintered nucs following Michael Palmer's plan. Two week ago I grafted larvae into wax queen cups and put them into a starter hive that was queenless for 24 hours. Of the 17...

    Re: Minimizing Drone comb building

One of my hives had a (seemingly) massive amount of drone cells in the spring. I considered culling them to help with varroa but I left them thinking that I would let them do as they pleased. Now I...

    Deformed Wing Virus?

Outside one of my strong hives, many of the dead and dying bees they drag out have split wings, some no wings at all. It is possible to tell if this is DWV since I am looking at the dead and dying...

Re: 3lbs package of bees purchase 4/2013

I bought three packages from them last year and two of them were docile and one was very aggressive. However, they supercedured the initial queen and a few months later they calmed down. I have...

I read this on John Seaborn's site, wolfcreekbees.com and this is what he recommended for Varroa. Has anyone tried any of the following, should I try them all or is there one that is the most...

    Re: Spring Supercedure

Another option would be to take a frame of eggs from a hive whose queen is good and put it in the queen-less hive - then cut out the queen cells? That would give her a little more time so more drones...

    Re: Spring Supercedure

    @Michael Bush

So you would suggest just letting the hive rear a new queen as opposed to buying one? Thanks for your help on this.
