  1. Re: Extractor-less honey by- "Honey Flow"

Dominic bees do get killed during bee blowing operations, mostly by getting stood on afterwards. But you are right, a brush would likely kill more.

The "killing millions of bees" statement is just...

Skunk figures how to crank the FlowHive. :D

  3. Re: Extractor-less honey by- "Honey Flow"

Here's a surprise, I was reading one of those sites where everybody was saying what a terrible thing the FlowHive is.

Then along comes Phil Chandler, the famous top bar hive guru and the guy who...

  5. Re: Extractor-less honey by- "Honey Flow"

Good point Arnaud, it is surprising the whole gamut of different perspectives have got so involved in the Flow Hive they feel the need to put long articles all over the net debunking it and on some...

Re: How Best to Hive Three New Nucs

The best way is to put some bees in a jar usually 300 bees, and do what is called an alchohol wash, which the mites let go of the bees, the mix is then tipped onto blotting paper and the mites show...

    Re: Apivar: low results

OK well a 1.8% adult bee wash could at a very rough calculation equal a drone brood infestation rate of 35 to 40 mites per hundred drone larvae some of those being multiple mites in one cell.

    So...
  9. Re: Extractor-less honey by- "Honey Flow"

Thanks Tipola it will be interesting. :)

About maybe 2 years ago I was talking to a guy in Takapuna Auckland, worked in Dick Smith, who told me his relation was starting a bee venture in Fiji,...

    Re: Apivar: low results

The egg to adult time for a drone is 4 weeks. So having a varroa count at 4 weeks may not mean much, those drones could have been infected fairly shortly after the strips went in.

    To be valid, we...
  11. Re: Extractor-less honey by- "Honey Flow" - Flow Hive

Actually just thinking about it, Flowhive could in theory anyway possibly work for some Australian commercial beekeepers.

Some of them spend the season progressively trucking their hives from...
  12. Re: Extractor-less honey by- "Honey Flow"

Doubt it will happen for many / any commercial beekeepers, even though some of their material would suggest that.

    Still, I've been wrong before.
  13. Re: Extractor-less honey by- "Honey Flow"

Tilopa, it is the foundation but also the cell walls are made of plastic too. The cells split all the way down to let the honey flow out.

You are a beekeeper in Fiji? Hi from New Zealand. :)

    ...
  14. Re: Extractor-less honey by- "Honey Flow"

There are only (I think) 7 frames per box spread over a 10 frame area meaning the cells are quite deep like the honey area in a wild hive.

So the theory is the queen cannot lay eggs in them. Not...

Re: HOW BEST TO HIVE THREE NEW NUCS

Yes, I think you have misunderstood some of MP's writings, if you asked him what to do in your situation I'm pretty sure he would say run all 3 nucs for honey. (After transferring them into hives of...

Which hives swarm? The strongest right? So why take from the weak to make the strong even more likely to swarm? You might catch the swarm but you might not. A top way to minimise productivity of the...

Local. Could possibly be a red flag as it implies coming from a smaller operation that may or may not invest in good mite control.

What I'm getting from your first post is you want fast growth....
