    Re: JZ BZ Queen Introduction

Nope. I have put a number of JZBZ cages with attendants still in the cage into hives, and it has been no problem.

    Re: Running Out of Room

I think there are so many different answers/opinions because bees don't all behave exactly the same, and in a given circumstance, will do what they collectively think they have to do to bring order...

    Re: Foraging Habits

I dont think I've ever seen a bee on a dandelion where I live, perhaps because by the time the dandelions are blooming, there are plenty of other types of flowers around that they seem to like better
  5. Re: Are brood cappings always the same color?

in my experience, the capping color is similar to the wax color of the comb the capped cells are on. newer, lighter comb has lighter colored cappings and older darker comb has darker colored...
  6. Re: Any Maryland beekeepers nectar flow ? How do you know?

I think you're fine with not feeding at this point, given your description of your hives. I have not found bees to be at all inclined to robbing this time of year around here. and congratulations on...
  7. Re: Any Maryland beekeepers nectar flow ? How do you know?

I use feeder rims on my hives over the winter and when the bees quit eating the sugar and start building comb in the space, I figure they've got enough coming in to support them. I'm a little south...

    Re: 42 degrees; got bees

me too! mine are nucs and i too wasn't sure if they would make it but they look pretty mighty today. keeping them fed, hoping for warmer weather someday.
  9. Re: Bees hanging out on neighbors porch--what to do ?

well, having no bee vac, and unable to think of a better solution, I sprayed them with soapy water. I suppose they must have just been lost, but since the neighbors' house faces a different...
  10. Re: Bees hanging out on neighbors porch--what to do ?

Thanks for your replies. These are not a swarm. They are clustering loosely on the vertical surface of a plastic box., there is no queen, and they all went away at dark last night. Today they are...
  11. Re: Bees hanging out on neighbors porch--what to do ?

I can't figure it out. They are bunching up on the outside of a plastic storage bin (none on the inside) and I washed it off last night. I would love to remove them but don't know how since it's not...
  12. Re: Bees hanging out on neighbors porch--what to do ?

PS it's not a swarm for those of you who might be thinking that.
  13. Bees hanging out on neighbors porch--what to do ?

I have several colonies on my suburban property. I moved two over the weekend after closing up for a day and encouraging reorienting by putting branches in front of the hives. Now there are a bunch...

    Re: Central florida plant identification

I have heard that bees really like sumac. I think they are done blooming now, as the ones in your photos have berries, and those would come after blooming.

Re: Mann Lake's Pro Winter Patties

I got "patties" this way two years ago, but not from Mann Lake I don't think. A big gooey glob wrapped in saran wrap.
There are little pieces of paper in between so I was able to dissect what must...

Re: Bees seem runny but not aggressive?

The queen is a grand-daughter (I think), of a VPBees Spartan line queen. open-mated, in Maryland. I got her from a guy who, as I recall, is outbreeding the VP stock in a program with Adam...

Re: Bees seem runny but not aggressive?

sorry, I should have said they're in a two deep nuc. queen is laying fine. there is no congestion at the entrance, and they're on a screened bottom board. wasn't using smoke, but I normally do...

Re: Bees seem runny but not aggressive?

I don't think they are being bothered by anything- they are in a nuc with a 1 inch opening, and I spotted zero hive beetles (yay, harsh winter!) and no other possible irritants.they aren't acting...

Bees seem runny but not aggressive?

I have a nuc that I started about the first of July with a purchased queen. they are doing well at building up and storing food. I went in today to look at them, and they were all just running...

Re: How long for new queen to start laying?

FWIW, in my location, with my bees, I very recently had a queen hatch under similar circumstances and she started laying in 10 days. She has gotten bigger since hatching, and has darkened a bit.
  22. Re: Is there an equivalent "FDA" group that approves ne meds or supplements for bees?

Looks like the answer is, in part, yes. See this link on drugs approved for controlling AFB http://www.fda.gov/AnimalVeterinary/ResourcesforYou/AnimalHealthLiteracy/ucm309134.htm

    BTW, there is no...
  23. Re: Which perrenials are you planting this fall?

if you're looking for garden-type plants rather than crops, caryopteris, which is pretty drought tolerant, blooms in August here and the bees love it. it comes In several varieties, and it's very...

    Re: Mowing around the hives

My bees like to attack the mower. I put on my bee suite to mow in front of them. Yep, the neighbors and passers-by are amused. I always mow there LAST, so I can go inside while they're calming...
