Re: Fall Flow in New England?

Last year I started with this package of buckfast bees in May and had a lot of drawn comb. I extracted 25lbs around Sept 15th and they refilled another 25lbs.

All depends on what they find in your...

Re: New Hives vs Old Hives

Powder sugar method is what I learned. You will take some powder sugar in a mason jar and scoop (one cup) bees into it. The cover should be pierced with nails, so the bees would not suffocate. Then...

  5. Re: Will winter storm Vulcan be the cinch pin for northern hives?

Last year I started with three hives, one Italian and 2 buckfast. The strong buckfast one is the only one that made it. This one had plenty of stores and fed a ultra-bee patty in January.

    Keeping...

    Re: Queens

Last season I got 2 packages and both hives decided to requeen themselves in the fall. So my conclusion is that it is best to have your own stock and that's exactly what I'll be doing this year.

    Sugar syrup with fungus

I have some sugar syrup that was prepared this summer. I was going to feed the bees and noticed that it has some fungus like green matter. Is it OK to feed them?

No big deal I can always toss it.

    Need a mated queen

My hive made a new queen and it was in the hive 2 weeks ago. Yesterday when I checked the bees were fanning and there were no eggs (still some brood in the hive).

Anyone help me get a new queen?

Re: Too late for a cut out?

Thanks for all the advice. I don't have a bee vac and was wondering if this can be done without it (also building the bee vac would take time and delay the job).

Too late for a cut out?

There is a guy who has the bees in the walls of his house and he says that honey is dripping from it. My questions.

    1) Is is too late to disturb them now and should I wait till spring arrives?

    First year hive swarming?

    Re: Swarm prevention

There is no harm putting the second super on and you can put it between the brood and the first super. If there is a flow they will build.
