Re: Do I understand this correctly ?

Not those guys, but (in northern temperate regions) bees naturally reproduce most in April-May or thereabouts - the farther outside that timeframe you get the more you fight nature. Just a guess,...

Re: When to Call it Quits

If the population is small then condense them down. Make sure they aren't being robbed.
  3. Re: a little tip on sealing ply-wood boxes

How true - the only long term wise way to go obviously is to buy top of the line everything right out of the gates - woodenware, tractor trailer, fork lift, 4 wheel drive duallie for outyard trips......
  4. Re: Starting to think beekeepers are cheap. lol

My observation is that very few new beekeepers ever get in the black. I did by building as much woodenware as economically as possible so that I could afford to get to a hive count which could...

    Re: update: Borage

Are those High Dynamic Range photos? What did you take them with? In any event they look great.
  6. Re: a little tip on sealing ply-wood boxes

The BCX plywood boxes that I started with in '09 are like new with just plain exterior paint on the outside.

For the first time ever I bought 60 or so very nice box jointed Cyprus hive bodies...

Re: Do I understand this correctly ?

Yes, as is a natural queen cup - Which you could also graft into of course.

    Re: Medium nucs...

The configuration isn't really all there is to determining the value of bees in spring time. 5 medium frames of bees in early April might still produce a good bit of honey on the main flow in May. ...
  9. Re: Here we go again.... Just a little early

That is bazaar. Why would someone steal the frames and leave the hives?

    Re: No luck making queens

For good results you need a good strong hive of course. It actually can be a strong nuc BTW. But ANY reasonably healthy queenless hive should make some cells if it has suitable larva during the...
  11. Re: Hives side by side East booms, west sags

Swap their position and see if the same hives - or the same positions - continue to do better.

Re: mating nucs before or after

I always place cells on the 10th day after grafting - so the 18th. You can make up the nucs on the same day, and by the time you place cells they will know they are queenless, but they will not have...

    Re: Treatment-Free Beekeeping Podcast

Well you know it is a niche within a niche - beekeepers who listen to podcasts. And by labeling it as TF you have kind of put it into a third subset as well - even though much of it is relevant even...

    Re: Treatment-Free Beekeeping Podcast

I listened to your podcast on expansion mode beekeeping this morning, and I gotta say you're doing a good job. Production, content and presentation are all very good. Two thumbs up. Keep 'em coming....

    Re: Treatment-Free Beekeeping Podcast

What software/equipment do you use for production? I'm an avid podcast listener (I will ck yours out) and I've thought of doing a 60 second beekeeping podcast. Unfortunately the sound of my...

    Re: Certified Sourwood Honey?

You can't let something like that get you down, and the truth is it's pretty likely that your honey has some other stuff in it besides sourwood - sumac is a good possibility around here. I tell...

    Re: Sick "Black" Bees

I hate to even bring this up, but as a practical matter since it is spread by bee to bee contact would it be better to kill the hive with sulfur or something than to let them dwindle and drift? ...
  18. Re: Who keeps their brood and honey supers separate and why?

I try to because it is easier to keep hive beetles and wax moths out of pristine honey comb post extraction. But really pollen stored in the comb is a bigger issue to me than if it has had brood in...
  19. Re: Replacement for light bulbs as a honey box heat source?

I believe that turning cfl bulbs on and off reduces their life span. Something to consider.

    Re: Do robbing screens work?

It's actually kind of handy if they are a bit loose - you can use wedge shims to fill the gap and hold them securely in place without having to fight with them. Even wearing gloves.

    Re: Mite season is here!

Dan - I've been seeing the same things - PMS typical spotty brood, very large (kinda I'll tempered) populations, lots of honey, mites easy to find in drone brood. I put the first round of apiguard...

    Re: Do robbing screens work?

They work. I automatically put them on any weak or small hives, and all hives that are being fed during robbing season.

They do no harm to any hive.
  23. Re: 4 GREEN Circle Ads are Genieco DO NOT DOWNLOAD

  24. Re: Considering all medium box hives, any reasons not to?

I use all 8 frame mediums and HAVE looked back, but for me the virtues of deeps don't weigh enough to use two sizes. I must admit though that it is a case of "I have never tried it therefore I have...
  25. Re: What to do with frames with SHB if hive dies?

I have done this to slimed mating nucs - just the boxes with attatche bb mind you, not even frames - hosed them off, dried in the summer sun for several days, bleached, repeat. Next year, they still...
