  1. Re: Causes of dead open larva. EFB, Sacbrood, what else?

Going to do an alcohol shake tomorrow. I haven't seen a mite in the brood I uncapped. And havent noticed any other signs (understand they may not show up).

Will uncap some drone brood too.

    Re: suprise for my fiancee

I understand the desire to surprise him with it, but he probably has ideas of what he wants. Deeps? All mediums? 8 frame... 10 frame? Top bar hive? Foundation/less? Does he want to assemble or...

    Re: Shook Swarm for EFB

If that is true why burn the combs? Pull the queen and let them raise another. Or cage current queen until brood is emerged?

Or do a shook swarm as a "split" and let them raise another and half...

Re: Rearrange frames on new hive?

I can see that the ends of your combs are curving off the center guide. It isn't a huge deal right now, but they will keep curving and end up bridging bars. Push the ends of the comb and smash them...

Re: Going to give grafting a go tomorrow...

I knew once opened on day one after graft that a lot of bees must have drifted back. Ended up with maybe a third of what was in there when I shook them. Going to add emerging brood as much as I can...

    Re: Shook Swarm for EFB

No EOs for me. Wondering if this is in some way mite caused. It is a top bar hive that wasn't really possible to OAV.

I need to do a mite shake, plan on that this weekend.

I just need bees now, need queens to make the bees, etc. Might be a year early as far as resources go.

    Having fun though!

I do know how old of larva to use and how small they are. My dad cannot even see them if on the grafting tool inches in front of his face. From arms length they just look like wet cell bottoms. I...

    Re: Shook Swarm for EFB

I'm curious about this as well. Assuming that my hive showing these symptoms needs some sort of intervention. Will hate to lose the combs, but I want to move them from top bar to Lang anyway so why...

Checked today and they have 5 capped. They are so small how small is too small? I am leaning towards giving them a shot "just because". And filling my cell builder with emerging brood for another...

  15. Re: Causes of dead open larva. EFB, Sacbrood, what else?

For sure see slumped larva in the bottom of cells, but they remain pretty white not really discolored. Uploading an HD video now of the comb sample I'm sending to Beltsville.

Someone used to, but must not have been a big seller. I wish someone still did too, I would probably use it. Not worried about cell size BUT better density I like.

    Re: Early bridge comb advice

Being that new of comb, it is not worth saving in my opinion. Too fragile to try to masking tape it onto a bar and not enough there to worry much about. Move the last good comb back and put the...

I cranked out the cost of what it'd cost to make boxes vs. buying the cheapest grade from Mann Lake and it makes absolute no sense for me not to buy them. It takes enough work to assemble them......

I don't know what my boxes measure (they are Mann Lake boxes), but I shave my frames down to 1.25" wide and run 11 in the 10 frame box. I'm not sure I'll keep that up for a whole lot longer because...

  25. Re: Cold front coming through tonight? Reduce entrances again?
