  1. Re: New Russian Package - Listless, W/Supercedure Cells, odd behavior

Update: I just had to go inspect again.

    - I know see curly larva in cells, not a lot but some! So, I have that going for me.
    - Total of 8 superS cells. I tried to take pics but the bees just...
  2. Re: New Russian Package - Listless, W/Supercedure Cells, odd behavior

Pretty sure I never said they "will" do anything Honey-4-All. I did say I had read a few things though...
  3. Re: New Russian Package - Listless, W/Supercedure Cells, odd behavior

    Honey-4-All, can you elaborate?
  4. Re: New Russian Package - Listless, W/Supercedure Cells, odd behavior

As chaotic as this all is, I love it. So interesting.
  5. Re: New Russian Package - Listless, W/Supercedure Cells, odd behavior

Another thought, does the existing queen lay in supercedure cells or does a worker? If the existing queen is duped into replacing herself, I'd have a new Russian queen, no?
  6. Re: New Russian Package - Listless, W/Supercedure Cells, odd behavior

I bought Russians for one reason. I had read that they are more tolerant to disease. After my Carnolian hive last year blew up with DWV and a host of other ailments, I wanted to try something.

Ok, yeah. forgot to add that I don't see any eggs or larva. I'm terrible at spotting eggs though.

OAV With Hive Top Feeder on?

I've read through the sticky post on OAV in detail and have chosen to treat my new package now that they have two weeks in the hive. One week with the queen released.

I have a hive top feeder on. ...
  10. How long for queen to be freed from her cage?

Installed my package this past Sat. night. Dug out the cork, pushed part of a mini-marshmallow in just like I've done in the past.

    However.

This time the queen cage had lots of white 'jelly'...

    Drones in new package. Normal?

Hi there, this is only the 3rd package I've ever bought. Installed this wknd no problem. Russians.

Saw a bunch of drones in the package which came from Georgia.

    Is this ok?
  14. New Package Russians coming, feed sugar water or use old comb loaded w/ honey/pollen?

I have allot of frames from my dead outs that are just loaded with honey and pollen. I've always read that when installing new packages you should feed feed feed. Helps them build out foundation.

  15. Ordered a full size frame NUC, but I'm an all medium frame BEEK!

I'm fortunate to have found a local person who is willing to sell me a NUC this coming mid-may. All of my wooden ware and hives are mediums which I like.

The NUC that is coming has deep size...
  16. One harvest creamed, one did not, why? (with picture)

My first harvest from two different hives wound up turning into creamed honey. This honey was harvested about July last summer.

My second harvest was later in August - never creamed.

    All of it...

    Re: My OAV Project

Maybe, I would prob. have tried that but the glow plugs I bought are very very long. So I felt I needed an alum. block just as long. That and I thought, heck. If one glow plug is good, two is...

Re: Beginner-What if I just let them swarm?

GREAT question. I'm in my 2nd year. First year my Italian hive that I thought I actively managed swarmed 4 times!

I live on 1/4 acre and luckily I have great neighbors who enjoyed watching me...

Re: Deadout, reuse frames come this spring?

I am no expert, and prob. shouldn't have said what I did as my local supplier is the best small business I have ever encountered. They are great and I'm not comfortable stating who they are. I'm...

Re: Deadout, reuse frames come this spring?

Great question. Basically, this past year, my first year I thought I was a master BEEK. They were doing so well! Then DWV hit, I did a test and holy cow. Complete infestation.

    I applied Api...

Deadout, reuse frames come this spring?

So, the hive is dead. All bees gone.

I saw a Fat Bee man video where he advocates new foundation each spring. I'm ok with that, seems to make sense to me.

I was thinking I'd save some...

    Re: My OAV Project

Good question. Yes glow plugs threaded and I taped the holes in the aluminum in order to thread them in. Those brass looking nuts are overkill, and only serve as lock nuts. Really not needed.
