    Re: Little bees

We had a mason bee hanging out at the entrance of our hives last year. They almost fit in except they are tiny.
  2. Re: Retired NYPD Bee Keeper Says "Bullying" Made Him Leave the Force

He was getting paid for this?
  3. Re: Foundationless Problem after installing bee boxes. Help!

The worst thing about this thread is that someone paid $2/frame for unassembled Kelley frames.

    Re: Saturdays inspection....

It's not something to get into the hives ASAP over. It is a decent gauge to know how much food the bees "think" they have.
  5. Re: Are you really losing money if you let your bees swarm?

I watched a video of a keeper with a yard of skeps during swarm season. They had some netting that they'd stake into the ground and go set it up so that the swarm had to fly up and into a big white...

    Re: Saturdays inspection....

Pattern isn't the greatest, but it is too early to really judge that. If it seems like most cells have egg/larva/capped or stores that's a good thing. Do you see any capped syrup at the top of the...

Re: Installed package. Pain ensued! Help

Be glad your kid wasn't alllergic. This ain't fly fishing. ;)
  10. Re: Converting a top bar hive to a langstoth

Did this last year. Been kicking myself for not cutting comb and fastening with either masking tape or rubber bands since.

This queen is a keeper though... ...
  11. Re: Are you really losing money if you let your bees swarm?

I wish you lived closer to me.
  12. Re: How fast would a shaken hive find way into new hive?

I thought about it, but by the time I got a queen these bees would have been broodless for a month or more. Figured this was a better use for them. I'll gain that hive back easily with the beast...

Re: How long can you hold package bees.

Just raise them for a couple of months for them, they'll be by to collect them in June. :)
  14. Re: How fast would a shaken hive find way into new hive?

Drone laying queen not laying workers. Single eggs at bottom of the cell. They raised a queen we just don't have drones this early.

Re: How long can you hold package bees.

You don't understand. :) What was the high and where were the "several days" you had to hold them for?
Here is Greer's weather. All days perfectly suitable for package installs. Even if you...

    Re: No shake package install

They have been through much worse by the time they get into your hands. And will be happy to be able to take a poop. I'm just saying a fresh package is a good intro to bees and how to handle them. ...

    Re: No shake package install

I'd suggest that you rethink beekeeping if you're scared of 3 pounds of homeless bees with nothing to defend. You do realize you are going to have to look in the hive at some point right?

    Better...

Re: How long can you hold package bees.

Weather shows highs of 70 on average for last week of March this year in Greenville. Freak cold snap? I still want to know who's suggesting you hold packages for several days. You can easily...
  19. Re: How fast would a shaken hive find way into new hive?

I know they certainly aren't terribly loyal when there is a better queen available, but I figured they would take a few hours to get sad enough, but I guess not. They were fanning like crazy outside...
  20. How fast would a shaken hive find way into new hive?

I had a drone layer in my one of my hives yesterday. I dropped her in alcohol and shook the hive out a couple of feet from my other hive at this yard. Immediately the bees started hanging all over...
  21. Re: Comb Building Timeline Approximation Sought

Well they aren't just bringing pollen in and leaving on the hive bottom, so I'm sure they are drawing comb.

Comb building timeline is hard to quantify. Seems like there is a critical amount of...

    Re: Another question about patties....

Nope. Some have no pollen, some have small amount, and some have larger amounts. Global has quite a few options. The idea is that pollen drives them to eat it more.

I have been using the bulk...
