    Re: New Beek Plastic Foundation

If a flow is on they will draw it out nicely and fairly quick. after the summer solstice it will come slowly if at all. My issue is if I make a split and they draw out queen cells on plastic I can't...

Re: Help! overrun with queen cells!

I caught a swarm in KY on Saturday. I made splits on April 1. Has queen cells, while they should have hatched, I'm not going to look till may 1.
  3. Re: Requeening - getting rid of the old queen

If you put a queen excluded over the bottom board she can't get back if she does. What I would suggest is place a top cover upside down and put a box that the same as a hive. Then brush all the bees...

Re: SHB's aka Small Hive Beetles

I have yet to see a small hive beetle this year. I think a below freezing continuous will kill them. That said they will move back in when the few survivors multiply

    Re: Another question about patties....

I'm still have patties on and I'm worried about SHB larvae, but seeing November I leave them. Most are on weak hives that needed a jumpstart. They are eating, but the flow should start this week, if...

    Re: Queen all alone

It could be a mite issue, and the hive absconded. I know that's a catch all answer when you don't know. I had a hive that was overcome with Robb ers and the queen was on top of the inner cover. Now...

Re: In my haste have I made a mistake?

Most times capped in my limited experience she's gone. On another note, I made a split about 2 weeks ago being careful that the queen wasn't in my split. Checked it no eggs and no queen cell, so I...

    Re: ABJ Update

The issues are all scientific papers are written with a bias. Some bias are intentional( who's paying for the research) or unintentional( bias in the experiment). The problem we have to deal with...
  9. Re: Newbie can't find nucs, how bad off am I starting with packages?

Feed feed feed. If you can get at least a frame of drawn comb will help. Biggest issue is when queen is released the bees won't have brood hormones in the hive. Because of that they may supersede the...
  10. Re: Decent flow going on...ideas on main source?

Bees are out working what they think are the best sources. In west KY apples, yard blooming plants, dandelion, and henbit. Tulip poplar and black locusts should start nectar week, and BlackBerry in...
  11. Re: Call 911, we are being robbed! Help please!

Leave it. I believe the bees will reorient to it . I have had issues and believe in robber screens. Especially on splits that are 3 frame splits.

    Re: Single source genetics bad?

Somewhat you are right. Best survivor queen is where your new queen should come. However, other factors also like brood pattern, hygenticness, build-up should be considered. I've made splits this...

    Re: why nucs so late?

Every nuc I've picked up is closed up I've gone through, as it's transferred to my equipment. Within 2 minutes every bee from box goes into mine. Then I close my box. The bees all go home with me.

    Re: why nucs so late?

I understand what your saying, but if as a newbee you need to know what your paying for. My question is which do you want- get a box of bees, hope it has drawn comb, hope it has a queen, hope it has...

    Re: package bees from kellys..

I've never had any issues with Kelleys. I've had one queen dead that was replaced. Bought 10 packages last year. Have one original queen. Some of the packages replaced queen as soon as eggs were...

I've never had problem with mice until now. I've pulled 3 nest including little ones today. How to clean comb? Should not be reused?

    Re: Orientation or Robbing (again)

I agree on robbing screens being standard. Unfortunately, I have issues with possums taking them off. .but I agree with the premise. It also keeps out yellow jackets, wasps, and hornets. They can...

Re: Question about virgin Queen behaviour

It could be the daughter is unmated. It could be that daughter hasn't found mom to kill her, and it could be mom hasn't swarmed yet. Its an unstable situation.

    Re: why nucs so late?

Newbees haven't thought how long it takes to get a queen mated. How long to build up 5 frames of bees. A proper nuc should almost be in a ready swarm state. Its what I expect, if I was buying a nuc....
  21. Re: If I may have killed my queen by accident, will a swarm cell replace her?

Well if no queen and a flow is on there is no need for nurse bees so they gather nectar like crazy.
  22. Re: Hypothetical question - 2 packages and 3 queens possible

Keep her caged, but put her in the weaker hive.screen side so can feed her. They may sting her, starve her, or keep her. If they keep her when you get a extra frame or 2 then you can see if you can...
