    Re: Queen cells

We're not too worried. We have a strong hive, and a strong nuc, so if this weak hive fails we can transfer the nuc into it. I'm also hoping to split out some bees into nucs later for overwintering....

    Re: Queen cells

I recently attended a presentation by Michael Palmer where he stated that packages seem to be superseding their queens much more often than they did historically.

At a guess - and this is just a...

    Re: Queen cells

I doubt that is a swarm cell.
The whole story isn't clear from the picture, but that particular hive is pretty weak, low population. It's two mediums, with about five frames of drawn brood comb the...

    Queen cells

We inspected our hives yesterday, one has decided to supersede their queen.

    View into a queen cell.

Almost a view into a queen cell, except she's being tended to.

Re: 3/8" crown better than 1/4" for frames?

Not sure if what I was trying to say came out right. I have grooved bottom bars, one of them cracked along about half the length, about a quarter of the bottom bar came away, so it wasn't worth...

Re: 3/8" crown better than 1/4" for frames?

I use 1/4" crown staples and Titebond II. One staple per side on the top bar, one staple per side on the bottom bar. I'm using grooved bottom bars, only had one split. I also shoot a brad through the...

Heh... I guess availability has changed a bit in the 11 years (almost to the day!) since Barry's comment.

I've always admired that he almost always tells what his experience has been and what he has seen, rather than saying "bees WILL do this" or "bees WILL NOT do that." In just over a year of keeping...

    Re: Any truth?

We had a laying worker hive last year. The bees were more than happy to bring in pollen to it, which makes sense, since they had larvae to feed.

I'm wondering if bees will bring in pollen to an...
  11. Re: Is it wise to fill a new hive with all frames filled with honey?

We lost both of our hives over the winter. We gave our new bees some empty brood comb, some honey stores, and some empty frames (going foundationless). Brood comb in the center, honey at the outside,...

    I've seen both of those.

RaJanuary's study was in progress over a decade ago, and aside from some preliminary results released while the study was still in progress, I'm not aware of any...

  14. Re: New hive bodies moved the hive over to em.

The cinderblocks under my hives were harboring black widow spiders. I turned the blocks on their sides so the wind can blow through them. So far there are some spiders inside them, but the black...

Re: This beek says honey DOES go bad

I can't say if raw local honey helps allergies or not. The science isn't there one way or the other, though there are plenty of conjectures. And unless someone is one of the extremely rare people who...

Re: Can I Feed My Bees Gatorade?

I don't but I would venture that they probably need at least some of that stuff. Electrolytes are used for all sorts of biological processes. I'd also venture that the electrolyte balance for a human...

Re: Can I Feed My Bees Gatorade?

Only the gatorade products labeled as "low calorie" or "lower calorie" use stevia.

For their other products, in 2010 they started to phase out high-fructose corn syrup in favor of a sucrose and...
  19. Re: Package queen dead, bees drift at high speed.

    UPDATE:

I swallowed my pride and bought one last package. Along with it, I bought a nuc box. Put the queen and half the bees into the nuc (5 frames drawn comb, one full of honey and another...

While the conversation has wandered into some interesting areas, I'd like to go back and comment on the quote in the original post.
