Re: Is there a standard for nucs?

See, I should have ordered from one of you guys instead. :( (see my other thread about the sad nucs I received.)

Re: Buying nuc's: Was I ripped off?

    That's what I was thinking. A nuc is a mini-hive, not a package.

Re: Buying nuc's: Was I ripped off?

I checked the first nuc as soon as the bees had woken up this morning, AND I SAW THE QUEEN! Woohoo!!! I also saw capped and uncapped brood. I didn't see any eggs (too many bees around) but I am...

Re: Buying nuc's: Was I ripped off?

Thanks, Oldtimer. That sounds like good advice. That's why I was hesitant to out the guy because I want to make sure it's not me misunderstanding something. Should I wait a few days since they went...

Re: Buying nuc's: Was I ripped off?

The first nuc has been very riled up, not aggressive, but out of sorts, since we got them while the second one has been ultra calm the whole time. So I suspect that if they are indeed queenless they...

Re: Buying nuc's: Was I ripped off?

Actually, I checked my invoices and the nucs were $175 each... The only other NM website offering nucs were $300. Oh well, live and learn..

I opened the second nuc, it was FINE!!! :D I saw the...

Re: Buying nuc's: Was I ripped off?

Nothing special about the bees, only that they are fairly local to me. I don't have a lot of options for local bees and I wanted bees that could handle the desert.

I have tried getting in touch...

Re: Buying nuc's: Was I ripped off?

Fortunately, we were home to receive the bees. But since we had no advance warning, we didn't have anything ready and we were also told the bees could stay in the nucs for a few weeks. Yeah, I bet I...

Re: Buying nuc's: Was I ripped off?

I paid $150 per nuc. So no, they were not cheap. The guy is also supposed to be reputable, but it doesn't look like it. :(

Buying nuc's: Was I ripped off?

I bought two nuc's a few months ago, and they were delivered last week. I had asked the guy repeatedly for a delivery date, none came, he just showed up in a truck one morning at 7:30am, offloaded...

    Re: One "Tip" Wonders

Don't forget Linda's blog. I am a newbee too and following Linda's triumphs and tribulations has been a real help!
  15. Re: I do not use smoke. I use sugar water mist.

Thanks for this! I was going to use sugar water but since we live in the desert I will use the smoker instead.

    Re: Foods to Avoid?

I recently became intolerant/allergic to soy in any form and had to stop eating it. Within 6 months I lost 40 lbs, and my husband who mostly stopped eating it too has lost several pounds as well. We...

  18. Re: Any drawback to putting out swarm traps early?

You have inspired me! I am in zone 8a so today I put out a bait hive with some lemongrass and beeswax in a spot where we have had swarms before. Hopefully the bees will decide it's a nice home and...
  19. Re: "Converting" a deep nuc to an all medium setup

Thank you so much for all the advice. Here I was thinking a nuc would be the easy option, well, it would have been if the equipment was the same size. I will discuss the options with hubby and with...
  20. Re: "Converting" a deep nuc to an all medium setup

Thanks guys. Being a newbee I am far from sure I would be able to find the queen right off the bat, but I am glad there is a solution to the problem.
  21. Re: "Converting" a deep nuc to an all medium setup

That's what I was afraid of... But how would you open up the broodnest or entice the queen to move upwards with 1 deep and 1 or 2 mediums? You can't place the deep frames in the medium boxes.
  22. "Converting" a deep nuc to an all medium setup

We are getting our first two nucs in a few weeks and of course I only now figured out that our medium 8-frame equipment is not going to fit the deep nuc.

So, what should we do? I would...

Re: Keeping bees in the desert

Yes, looks like 50% of the palm trees died and a lot of cacti as well.
And the creosote bushes just shriveled up.
