A family member bought an in town house in MA last year. In early August crowds would appear to watch the trees on her sidewalk come alive with bees. Apparently the humming/buzzing can be heard...
  4. Re: Drone comb, lots of references to it, but what is it?

Tx! Wondering. To avoid the burr comb, how many frames should I manipulate the wax foundation to allow for some drones? Or is that discouraged as it will encourage drones all the time? Maybe...
  5. Re: Drone comb, lots of references to it, but what is it?

interesting. I use wax wired foundation and at times struggle with messy drone comb being built on the lower edges of the frames. These lumps of drone come are a mess.

    For tidiness sakes I might...
  6. Drone comb, lots of references to it, but what is it?

I've seen FBM (Fat bee man) and many others refer to drone comb when looking at uncapped frames.

Do bees draw comb to be for drones? I know when there is drone brood, the bulbus cappings. But...

Re: Is the northeast in a dearth now?

Question, if there is a dearth (or at least you think there is one) is that a sign for a beekeeper to definitely harvest whatever honey they were planning on harvesting?

    I'm getting worried,...
  10. Caught a nice big swarm today, and found the queen!

These guys bailed on one of my hives. I watched them leave, then I waited till they settled on a branch about 20 feet high. I cut it down, then trimmed the branch, then dumped the...

    Re: Comb Too Old?

Piggybacking on his very good question: IF there is some capped brood within these old frames do you just sacrifice them?

My old comb is in the bottom box, I'd love to replace with nice new...
  12. How to get bees in the hive so I can move the hive...

Giving my brother a hive that is the spawn of a swarm. I was thinking that I'd wait till night when they are all in the hive, then block entrance, then move hive the 20 miles away.

    Problem,...

  16. Re: 10 days of Honey Super - No activity, Take it off?

Nope, no excluder. Good idea moving a frame or two up. I'll do that.
  17. Re: 10 days of Honey Super - No activity, Take it off?

  18. Re: 10 days of Honey Super - No activity, Take it off?

  19. 10 days of Honey Super - No activity, Take it off?

    Swarm of a Swarm!

My hive swarmed this spring, massive grouping of bees. I caught and hived them. Within a few weeks, 3 mediums were built out. Within one month the hive swarmed again!

    This is my second year...

Italians. Swarm of a Swarm. 1 month old hive. These bees are the offspring of a hive that swarmed one month ago. Original hive swarmed THREE freagin times. Now these bees...
  22. Re: Which hive would you put a honey super on?

Ok, I went with the Carnolian hive. Everything seemed neat and orderly in there. There was a nice brood/honey arch on each frame of the 3rd box.

The Italian swarm hive was crazy/gonzo. Bees...
  23. Re: Which hive would you put a honey super on?

Great question. I did, but then my first hive swarmed, 3 times! I caught two of them and hived them. There went all but one of my spare supers.
  24. Re: Which hive would you put a honey super on?

All great points. I'm going to do a top box inspection for existing honey/brood patterns. I can't go into other boxes as its just too **** hot out!

I'm leaning toward the Carni's but will see...
  25. Which hive would you put a honey super on?
