    Re: New way to inspect

I document my hive inspections by wearing a GoPro and then narrating what I see as I go through the frames. The good news is that I get a fairly decent record of what I notice during my inspections,...

    Re: Huge Mistake = Robbing!

This was my experience as well. I had a jar feeder on top of a small, weak hive, and a quart disappeared in half a day. That should have been a clue to me, when the hives with 4-5x the number of bees...

    Re: 1st Solo swarm catch.

Yes! Of my 6 colonies this year (now 5 :() I get most excited about the ones I trapped, captured, or cut out. Not that there's anything wrong with my my packages, but I just get really excited to see...

    Re: Does pollen imply nectar?

OK! So here's what 4 drops of coloring in a quart of syrup looks like when it's stored:

My GoPro has poor color saturation; it's much brighter in real life!
  5. Re: Am I the only one who doesn't have capped honey in July?

I'm with you. I have one over-wintered hive that had EFB. I eventually cleaned it up, but they missed our early Spring flow.

I had 5 other colonies that I started in Spring (two packages, one...

Re: Questions about brood and robbing

I have had two hives be victims of robbing, and probably from one or more of my other hives. Both resulted from my feeding them syrup dearth our Los Angeles dearth.

The first one happened, and I...

Re: Will Bees move honey stores

Do bees ever move stored food _upwards_ in a managed hive?

Re: What determines a drone cell?

What happens if an unfertilized egg gets laid in a worker cell? Does it end up being a small drone? Or do the nurse bees try to enlarge the cell?
  10. Re: I am calling the dearth in the Pacific NW

We've had no rain here in Los Angeles in at least 2 months. I'm feeding.

    Re: corn pollen

Very cool! I grow 100 lineal feet of Bi-Licious sweet corn every year, and I don't recall ever seeing bees on the tassels. But I'll look this year!

Re: Injuring queen to cause supersedure.

I wonder why the bees haven't evolved behavior like this on their own, e.g. raising a new queen and awaiting her successful mating before killing the old one. It seems like it would fix one of the...

    Re: water quality for bees?

My problem is that my next-door neighbor is complaining about massive bee traffic around her swimming pool during our present heat wave. I had a cloud of bees on my patio because I watered my plants,...

    Re: water quality for bees?

So if I have a birdbath next to my hives that I fill from a timered drip watering system (e.g. fresh, clean water all the time), should I put a salt lick in it or something to flavor it a bit?
  16. Re: should bees be fed during "summer dearth"?

Yes, I think I killed a colony by feeding while they were queenless (though I didn't know it at the time).

I put a jar feeder on top of the colony, and it was drained in half a day. I did it a few...

    Re: Haste makes waste!

I'm not sure if there's any causal relationship at all, although 3 and 6 are adjacent to each other on the hive stand, 4 inches apart.

Yup! The scary part is that there really was no reason for me to look down at the ground. And she didn't really look like she could fly very well.

    Haste makes waste!

So I'm inspecting Hive 1 after a 2 week business trip, and WTH? No eggs, no brood. I'm queenless! There is an empty queen cell:

Re: Laying worker or new queen?

I was out of town for two weeks, but I'm back. I just checked, and I have a queen, and she's laying!

I'm not sure whether it was worth the effort, but at least now I can save that I've done it...
  21. Re: Trapped swarm supersedes after 6 weeks. Normal?

So I went back 16 days after emergence, I'm pretty sure I saw freshly laid eggs! I couldn't be 100% sure because the lighting was poor, but I'm about 80% sure.

    I won't get a chance to inspect...
  22. Re: Best way to remove a swarm that just moved in yesterday.

It can be done. My friend evicted a freshly-moved swarm after they'd been there for less than 48 hours. But you want to make sure you put the repellent behind the bees, to drive out them outward.

Re: Laying worker or new queen?

So I did this two more times; once 10 days ago, and once on Sunday the 29th. I did not see any eggs during either visit. So here's the timeline:

    April 17: Package installed.
    April 19: Queen...
  24. Re: Packages Considered a Working hive??

It's all about cost vs. risk vs. time vs. experience.

Your packages are all established now, with laying queens. You weren't 100% sure that that was going to happen when you bought the packages,...
