Re: Small cell bees and Survivor bees

I would be interested in the basis for this statement. My understanding is that the female varroa is laid every 30 hours in the capped cell and that all immature varroa die when the bee emerges. The...

    Colony Identifer

How do you name/identify your colonies? Assume they are all in one location. Does the name/identifier make reference to the heritage of the colony's queen? I am looking for a better system.

    Thanks

    Re: No shake package install

An amateur or backyard beekeeper has the luxury of time and should consider not following commercial beekeeping practices.
  5. Re: Getting Nuc! But my set up only has two shallow 8 frame boxes...

As Harley said your hive bodies are mediums and not shallows. Shallows were the popular size honey supers decades ago and mostly old goats have them. Yes, I am an old goat.

Re: I can't believe the cost of nucs this year!

All microeconomics (price theory) is local and depends on local conditions. What a nuc is worth in Fla is not the same as in New England. You have to admire the efficiency of the free market system...
  7. FoulBrood and Africanized Bees, Al & TN, FYI

Re: Ideas for different hive top design?

Bees are experts at ventilating their colony. Think tree.

But if you believe they need extra ventilation. Think 1" by 4". Make an extra shallow honey upper with 4- 2" holes drilled, one per...
  9. Re: Newbee saying hello. first installation and no protective clothing

Please consider one thing. The packages you installed did not have an "investment" to protect. The next time you go into them and they have drawn comb and open brood they might not be as sweet.

Re: First year plan ADVICE wanted

This is not a suggestion but just an attempt to make the poster aware of this option. Some claim that the added stress of regressing from 5.4mm down to 4.9mm is too much for a beginning beekeeper....

    Re: 9 frame spacer plans

The inside dimensions of an eleven frame box is 14.75". In large cell language that's a 10 frame box. If you want to run nine frames in a "10" frame box so that the bees overdraw the combs the frames...
