Poll: Re: How is your crop looking?

It's turning out to be a sobering year for us. Poorly mated queens, swarmy, slow build up. We marked all our queens 3 weeks ago, as of today about a third of them are gone or have been replaced....

Poll: Re: How is your crop looking?

We have not had rain for at least 2 months. Pollen was good but no nectar. Maybe the buckwheat will save us.

Maybe South or North Dakota? They usually make a lot of honey. There's work in Williston as well!

Poll: How is your crop looking?

Not much of a honey flow where I'm at. Even with the strongest colonies it is pretty light. Seems like the blooming times are a little out of whack too.

    Re: Almond Pollination Payment

    Steve,
Explaining the terms of your contract went a long ways at putting my mind at ease. I can see there are some risks on both sides of the deal and it looks like the agreement addresses both...

    Re: Sideliner wanna be questions

KYCOUNTRY, I would make sure the honey house and storage setup are bee-tight, & that is pretty darn tight. If you can afford it, I would build a warming room in case the supers get cold before you...

    Re: Colors of Hive

I run several colors. I checked the outside temps with a laser thermometer last summer and noted 20 to 30 degree difference in surface temps. White being the coolest, light green next, then light...

Stevebeeman, Thanks for the detailed explanation. The way you described it, explained the agreement in much better terms. Sounds more fair and reasonable than I first thought.

    Almond Pollination Payment

My understanding is if a colony does not cover 8 frames when they pop the lid, then that colony does not count and wont be paid for, is that right?

If that is right, wouldn't it be more...

Re: Beekeeping Business Planning - Can you make money in this business?

quote My understanding is the money is not to bee made selling just honey. What about selling queens, wax, nucs, swarms and honey, teaching classes. I would rather invest in a nice queen rearing...
