    Bees on Maple

For _years_ I've been wanting to get on our 3rd floor porch and get some photos of honeybees foraging on the maple flowers. This was on Saturday, and I could almost see the flowers blooming.

Re: GRRR stupid hive feeder leaked

A plastic milk jug isn't strong enough....it will (eventually) collapse and pour syrup on the bees. Glass or a very stiff plastic is the way to go.

The polarmetrics machine is available for sale (or was last time I heard). It is really designed for in house use (one honey packer/blender had purchased a machine last I knew...this is the machine...

Re: How to transport nucs 1600 miles?

I'd do them in the car, AC on...you probably don't have a winter coat, but put on warm stuff.

If the bottoms are screened, then also screen the top, and mount them in the car so they have plenty...

Re: FDA ruling it the works?

Because if there are no labs that will do an independent test for rice syrup (I don't believe there are) and no labs that will do independent tests for less than 5% HFCS (I don't believe there are),...

Re: FDA ruling it the works?

Without a way to test for adulteration there is very limited enforcemt possible.
The Florida (and some other) standards call for 100% purity, but there is no good test that can find rice syrup at...

Re: My (alternative) theory of the Bush Miracle

The largest race isn't necessarily larger than a smaller race on enlarged comb. I'm not sure why such an observation (that amm tend to appear small) is necessarily in conflict with the idea that amm...

Re: My (alternative) theory of the Bush Miracle

Thanks Barry, I didn't realize it was posted here.
There is plenty of data between Grout, Badeaux, and the other recent document I posted to actually look at the ratios that have been questioned. ...

Re: My (alternative) theory of the Bush Miracle

The well known studies that look at morphometrics/cell size change are the Badeaux, and the Grout studies.

The data from Badeaux is in the older ABC's of Beekeeping (Root)...charts measuring bees...

Re: My (alternative) theory of the Bush Miracle

Certainly in recent times (with domestic bees being on foundation), AMM is often referred to as the small black German bee, not just the black German bee. If AMM is the largest race of bee, then it...

I wear 501s every day and never noticed a problem. If I do wear a veil, it is usually a jacket, and probably protects much fly to some extent.

    Re: newly inst. package backfilling

Foundation will allow the queen to lay before workers draw it out enough to put nectar or syrup in. Place it in the broodnest....Once it is laid up the bees will draw it out in earnest.
  19. Re: How can I eradicate honey bees from the recesses of a banyan tree trunk?

    I wouldn't do either.

I'd drive out the bees rather than trap them out, and I'd stuff fiberglass insulation where the combs are best one can.
  20. Re: How can I eradicate honey bees from the recesses of a banyan tree trunk?

I'd drive the bees out with beego (applied behind the nest).
I'd place a weak hive (perhaps queerness, but with brood) near one of the entances to hopefully attract the fleeing bees...if there us an...

No, they are not the authors...they are the references. Whomever wrote the article doesn't understand the subject. The author(s) is unnamed.
