    Re: Beetle Baffle Review

I assume that the small ledge that extends inside of the bottom board prevents the SHB from climbing up the side of the hive. My first thought was these bugs fly. I dont know.

    Re: Moving Hive

Thanks. I think I might do a south east face too. That way I can kind of see the entrance and still give them the morning sun.

    Moving Hive

I have a first year hive that gets too much shade. I have SHB's and I want to get it into full sun. I was wondering how important it is to face the hive to the east to catch the sunrise. The hive...

Re: Hive situation SHB V.S Overcrowding

I screened my inner cover as well. Saw a drop in SHB numbers last week after screening but this week the numbers went back up. The battle rages on.

Re: Hive situation SHB V.S Overcrowding

I only have one hive and I have seen them chase the beetles in the brood chamber and upper deep, but when they are on the inner cover they seem to ignore them. My assumption is that they pose less of...

Re: Hive situation SHB V.S Overcrowding

It just so happens that this hive is extremely pleasant, so your theory is supported.

Re: Hive situation SHB V.S Overcrowding

I also need to get it out of the shade. When I set it up in the spring it had almost full sun, but now later in the summer it gets a lot of shade. Ill lose the inner cover. Should I put the inner...

Thanks I figured that if it wasn't completely drawn then it wasn't too confined.

    Hive situation SHB V.S Overcrowding

Hey need some opinions. I have a first year hive that has a full upper deep and a super they are starting to fill. The super has all 10 frames drawn, but not all the frames are drawn out enough to...

Re: Inner cover access for SHB

I used the window screen trick and saw much fewer SHB this week. Still killed around a dozen on the inner cover and 3-5 in the first honey super, but it was much better than 30-40 like last week. Now...

Re: Inner cover access for SHB

Interesting. I need to talk to some other local beekeepers to see if they use inner covers as well. Ironically I am the only beekeeper that I have talked to that has issues with SHB around here. I...

    Inner cover access for SHB

I have some SHB's in my one and only hive. It seems to be a strong hive and they have done a good job keeping them at bay (plus I made an oil trap under the SBB and that has helped). However, about a...

    Re: Late summer beekeeping question

    David,
I have done weekly inspections. At one point they back filled the brood chamber, but instead of swarming the queen went up to the upper deep and started laying up top. Then once she had...

    Re: Late summer beekeeping question

I was instructed by most of the local beekeepers to feed feed feed the first year. If I planned on harvesting any honey they told me to stop as syrup honey is not nearly as good as wild honey.

    Late summer beekeeping question

I have a first year hive, I bought a package of bees back in April. They have done pretty well considering the rainy weather here in Virginia. I have fed 1:1 all spring and summer and they have...

I check once a week, I may have to take a peak mid week though at the rate they are going. I may be at 80% by then. Thanks.

Quick question. I just added my upper deep a week ago and the hive is drawing it out quickly. They have almost seven frames with partially drawn comb. Should I add the next honey super when they have...

    Re: My homemade SHB killer

Good point. The two shims on the front and back are to seal a gap in the SBB so bees can't wander into the oil pan.

Re: Recycling Jars for honey storage

I use an all natural dish washing soap (so they say) and it may not be harsh enough to get the smell out completely. I may try a diluted bleach solution and see if that helps. Thanks

    My homemade SHB killer

I decided to try my luck at building my own freeman style SHB trap. I tried a beetle blaster and caught 2 beetles in about 3 weeks (lame). I am more lethal with my hive tool! It seems like the hive...
