Re: Colony update here in Pa

Opened hives to add Dadant winter patties. Five double deeps and one double nuc. Four of the five deeps have huge clusters that fill up the entire ten frames on the top deep. One deep has smaller...
  2. Re: Better to buy a suit or commit to getting stung more often?

I think tbreslow hit the nail on the head. If wearing a suit makes you more comfortable working your hives, then by all means use one. The worst thing you want is to feel rushed and nervous. I...

Re: honey locust trees worth to plant?

I have a honey locust on my property and the bees won't go near it when it is in bloom. Even the bumble bees don't touch it.

    Re: feeding nucs

I found if I bevel the top of the hole the lid will fit down further and touch the hardware cloth so the bees can get to the syrup. I used a sanding drum on a Dremel tool to bevel the top, which...

Last year my wife said I could only have one hive. I put in a second one a couple of weeks after the first and of course she complained, but quickly saw the advantage of my having two hives to allow...

Dr. Dave Tarpy from NC State gave a small hive beetle presentation to our bee club last night and he mentioned that SHB is attracted to vinegar. I don't know if a small amount of vinegar in sugar...

Re: Dumbest thing you ever bought for beekeeping?

Gloves. Never used them. I get stung in the hands sometimes, but the stings really don't bother me.

Re: Colony update here in Pa

Checked my last surviving hive today and it I'd dead. I lost all four of my hives this winter. I had 2 full size hives and 2 nucs. On the bright side, I now have lots of drawn comb.
