    Re: Bush Lespedeza

I was harvesting some BL( I think...) seed the other day, and got chased off by one defensive bee - for what that's worth.

    Re: Bears in suburbia

I had to run an (extra) lower wire last year. A young bear was sneaking under my wire. I have a 20 mile charger on a 25 yard enclosure, so the "jolt" is substantial. It appears that once they get one...

    Re: uncapping for 100 hives

The chain upcapper I saw in action was very functional. The gentleman had a very nice setup (direct mounted over a cappings spinner), and ran it that way for years.

If I were to ever get back up...

Re: Join 2 week hives or not...

House bees develop wax glands at around 9 days after emergence, so rather soon in your case (new brood at wax producing age). Giving at least a few more weeks to catch up/ get rolling - if they...

Re: to smoke or not to smoke

On a warm day, when the propolis doesn't pop, and the sun is out, and there is a flow going on, and the hive is queenright, they tend to ignore my intrusions more-so if I approach them gently, than...

The combine sounds like a good bet. Can you cage one queen and bank her?

    Re: uncapping for 100 hives

A chain uncapper, fed into a cappings spinner, drained into a heated, water jacketed, settling tank (sump) works rather well, although the cappings tend to become drenched in honey all too soon. I...

    Re: young newbee

    'Apologies.

Just another bout of paranoid/manic/depressive/obsessive/compulsive (typical beekeeper :) ).

Good luck. You are in good hands here.

Re: Swarm prevention - when to act

(Texas) Buckfast bees, and spring "walk away" splits over a double screen, then either re-combine (newspaper), or set off new. I had one swarm take over a dead out last spring, but it's been years...

Re: Swarm prevention - when to act

What breed of bees are you running?

You can always re-combine swarms to mediocre hives (if any) or combine the swarms themselves. I've had years where one colony was made up of several swarms...

    Re: Cannot find the Queen

Bees will be bees. Mine tend to requeen themselves, and I try not to cut out cells unless - as you say - you determine that you have a laying queen.

It is likely you have a virgin running...

Re: to smoke or not to smoke

$20/pt, $90/gal. I'll be getting a gallon next time. It's Lemongrass Oil & Spearmint oil, Thymol & Lecithin. Agreed on the "cover scent" & syrup "brood intro" logic - precisely. I believe they "tank...

    Re: Beekeeping conversions/rules of thumb

You are right - it's been a while. Nice "catch"

Normal brood nest (mostly worker brood): 3 days an egg, 6 days a larva, 12 days a pupa (capped).

'Should have read 1 egg, 2 larvae, 4 pupae ...

    Re: Checking hives without gloves?

Gloves? Of course, it's such a simple precaution. I prefer goatskin.

Maybe because the worst I was ever stung was on my hands. 'My fault - I went to a distant out yard and forgot my gloves....

    Re: Beekeeping conversions/rules of thumb

I used to present to much younger students, but one well received concept was the "Rule of Three's"

(All in a "normal" hive, exceptions, of course! That's when you know they are thinking...)
