    Re: Dying swarm.

I had luck once getting a swarm to move into a nuc with swarm lure. It was pretty interesting to watch as they moved from high in a tree to the nuc on a stepladder. Once they started it was like...

    Re: Pollen Patties

Nothing really coming in here yet. REAL late spring, although a VERY short maple syrup season. I'd guess that next week will see some real pollen loads coming in if the rain holds off.

    Nice pic!

    Re: Pick-up pushed back!

Daniel said it the best. And it's not uncommon at all for your best laid plans and strict itinerary to get moved around. To me, it's what makes it all the more satisfying.
  7. Re: When to remove do Spring removal of extra fall honey

Anytime I've taken fall honey that was still surplus in the spring (or from dead outs), if it isn't crystalized it gets that way soon after I bottle it. Not the end of the world but something to keep...

    Re: The holly bush

I agree. Leave well enough alone. The bees have it all figured out.

I say you should go for it!
  10. Re: Will the bees clean out this frass and web from the comb?

Sure, they'll clean that right up. Not much damage there.

Re: How to find an unmarked Queen?

It takes a bit of practice but it's worth it. I don't spend a lot of time looking at individual bees. I look for a group of bees that seem to be paying attention to something. Often, it's the queen....

    Re: Split, Before,during ,or after.?

I do my splits when the apples start blooming. Lot's going on around that time and I usually have good success. After that, I split any time it's warm and the hive is strong enough.

    Re: Alternative Package Install Method?

I'd be afraid that they'd wax the box in place. I just shake. It takes no time at all and you're done.

Re: Cutting deeps to medium or shallow?

I cut deeps into mediums and then cut up the leftover to make various sized shims.

Re: 5 gallon buckets- Home Depot or food grade?

A couple of years ago I bought food grade buckets on ebay. I use them for honey as well as maple syrup (sap) so the dual use has paid off well for me.

Re: Varroa in a 2 week old hive

I don't think you're over reacting but I would keep an eye on things. Keeping a count over a period of time is beneficial. You don't need to be looking every day but putting together some metrics as...

Re: skunk troubles and hive stands

I'm not sure the aspirin trick always works. My hives are all 14" or more off the ground. I do sometimes get a visit but it never seems to be a major problem. I've never tried the carpet tack strip...

    Re: Fine mess I've made!

Lots of smoke. If you can run a piece of fishing line around the perimeter of the comb and draw it in a loop you might be able to work it free without a lot of hive tool scraping. I did that once to...

Re: putting a swam in queenless hive?

You can try but wouldn't it be easier to hive the swarm and buy a queen? You have a bit more control of the immediate future by doing it that way. I always worry about that my queenless colony isn't...

    Re: Foundation for honey supers

You can just put foundation on and let them go ahead and work it. They'll pull wax if they need the room to store nectar. If the flow is on, they'll pull wax from foundation quite quickly. Actually,...

Re: Sticking Hives next to someone else's...

I look at it the same way many posters have. I wouldn't do it. Suppose I'm deer hunting and have a ground stand on top of a small hill overlooking a prime area. I wouldn't be too pleased if another...

tefer2 is right. Firefox has, for some time, taken a hard stance on the java developers kit. You can manually turn in on and I'm not certain that it's completely safe. I'd upgrade, try it and then...

    Re: Hive Paint

I'm completely confused. Are you trying to say that my bees spend so much time on my oil based painted hives and they're bringing in such substantial loads of paint dust that they are creating...
