    Re: Inbreeding?

The only sure way to know, would to not let your hives raise drones this coming year then fly some of those drone catching contraptions around and see what you get. You could always phase in all...
  2. Re: They say Americans are getting grumpy about the never ending rising prices these

You might be right Lauri, 8 framers for nucs, with a feeder, you can even get a real 5 frames in there, well, at least 6 even.... I purchased 20 5 framers at $10.50, that was quoted mill run, but I...

Re: Way to "store" a queen over winter

Get a double screened bottom board and overwinter them above a strong hive

Re: How many of you started with just one hive?

I started with one, but I bought it as a double 8 frame deep. Could've split it right off the bat probably, but as long as the bees are doing well and if your location has good forage it's not an...
  5. Re: Improved divided mating nuc.Better for feeding when nights are cold spring/fall

The first 4-5 were broken for me as well, but only in the second post.

Re: Yellow Jackets robbing hive – how to stop

Re: Arrghhh, Robbing and possible swarm?

Swarm or you hive absconded due to the robbing and your queen is up there now.
  8. Re: Help with yellow jackets - don't understand making hive entrance smaller

Somone on beesource threw that number out, and it does refer to peak season foraging/hive population. With a hive of about 60,000 bees, it's roughly 3%.
  9. Re: Help with yellow jackets - don't understand making hive entrance smaller

You lose up to 2000 bees a day from natural attrition, a few bees to yellow jackets each day isn't anything.
  10. Re: Can Deformed Wing Virus affect other species?

Other bee species can get it, other than that I wouldn't worry about it.

    Re: Adding a new queen.

The virgin queen would likely kill the mated queen.

Give her away? No, you find a Russian Queen, then make a split off the package to use the Russian Queen for, and now you have two colonies....

Re: Burr comb and frames seething with bees

I'm betting you're using plastic frames. If not, it's because the gap between the top of the frames and the cover is too wide for some other reason. Use a puff of smoke to move the bees out of the...

    Re: Comb honey and foundation

You can get the thin surplus foundation, but I'm leaning towards foundationless for cut comb or starter strips at least. The main thing you need is a strong flow...

Re: Can you use Polyester in smokers?

I recall reading a thread on dryer lint, but you just had to be careful that it was 100% cotton and you didn't run any synthetics through the dyrer at the time as they will have noxious smoke and or...

I'll tell you this too then... I've bought TF bees.... 12-14 year TF operations.... didn't hold up one year at my location.... Honestly, TF is more of a goal to work towards, not something that just...

    Re: “Single-hive” honey?

On a strong flow, it wouldn't matter, but I know I will have different frames of capped honey throughout the season and sometimes I feel it's a shame to mix them but who is to say a blend doesn't...

    Re: whats going on here?

EFB can be a symptom of Parasytic Mite Syndrome, aka PMS, but as they look white still, I'm betting it's just PMS. You mite not see too many mites now with the population reduced, but let me guess,...
