Re: First robbing event, First police visit

    Absolutely.

It is starting to sound like this is the best approach.

First robbing event, First police visit

It's my second year but first year extracting honey. We're done extracting for the season now, so I took my last two wet supers and put them on a hive above the inner cover in a suburban...

Re: Reason to go to top entrances

Second year beekeeper here. I always thought that too, but I took a University of Minnesota course with Marla Spivak and Gary Reuter this spring and was told that in fact, the foragers hand off the...
  4. Re: I weighed my hives today....not at all what I expected

sqkcrk - try standing on a bottom board with one edge on the scale and one edge on the floor. That should be a closer analog.

    Re: my new gadget

Do you adjust for the amount of hardware on the hive? i.e. when you add a super do you discount the new readings by the size of the empty super? I'd love to see a graph from your excel document :)
  6. Re: OK to leave swarm cells when releasing queen?

I went back and cut out the queen cells.

They were all over the queen cage when I released her. I had waited 3 days before releasing.
  7. OK to leave swarm cells when releasing queen?

I made 2 nucs 4 days ago. 3 days ago I hung a purchased queen in the hive in a queen cage, and today I released the queen.

In one of the nucs I noticed two swarm cells hanging from the bottom of...

    Re: Winter Cutout

Thanks everyone for talking me off the ledge.

I went out today and offered to just replace his wood duck house. He said it is no big deal, just keep it as long as needed.

    I dumped in #10 of...

Hi Lauri - that is a really neat set up!

Unfortunately, he wants his wood duck house back. I can talk to him about foregoing his wood duck house until spring, but he may be concerned about having...

    Re: Honey Extractor

Is it possible to use that with a 5ga bucket instead of a garbage can? I'd rather not process my honey using garbage cans. Otherwise, the design does seem nice.

One wonders why nobody makes a...

    Re: Inspection day 14

We found the capped brood in the pics too! Funny, we thought it was all honey on site. I'm admitting to it to help others who may encounter the same thing.

    How long should we feed?

    Inspection day 14

    Re: Easy 5-frame nuc plans

Thank you for posting these. I built a set with two sheets of plywood and they turned out great.

One measurement was off - the sides should be 9 1/8" but they're marked 9 3/8", making them just a...

Re: Do I need a bottom board?

I mean the traditional bottom board with entrance. I'd like to just tack on a piece of plywood to the bottom of a medium and add in a front nuc-style opening, as pictured.

    So my stack at minimum...
