    Re: Beekeeper Smell

My hives are close to the shed and I've found using wd40 and carb cleaner can attract hostile visitors. Not sure which one or both they found offensive but the message was clear.

Put a couple of drops on a q-tip or a piece of paper towel, wiped a line around the box and dropped it in bottom of the box. Placing the q-tip/towel in a sandwich size zip lock may cause the smell...

    Re: Essential Oils

I use lemon grass oil, old boxes and a couple of frames of old comb. Must smell like home because I had one swarm land about 18" behind my head while I was installing a box.

I picked up one of the small tool pouches that attach to your belt from the big box store. I was tired of all my work pants having the back right pocket at least partially propolised (if that's a...

    Re: Dirty dishwater color

Used standard baker's yeast, aggressive stuff that blew excess fermentation foam out the airlock. It was extremely cloudy until last week, suddenly everything settled out and it's very clear (with...

    Re: Dirty dishwater color

Good to hear Vance, everything has been fermenting for well over two months and I was wanting to rack the antique orange but didn't want to "short change" it by racking before the fruit sank.

The traditional meads are still a bit cloudy but coming around to a better color. The antique orange (oranges, cinnamon, raisins) suddenly went clear with a nice golden color. I've read "wait...

Drift Watch also works and can show bee hive as a "specialty crop" for registered apiaries.

    Michael,
Thanks for the info, that mirrors what my research has uncovered; I really appreciate the insight. Unfortunately, I need to drive them down and still have some gaps on the best approach....

    Re: Drumming a trap out

Using any of the chemicals will hamper robbing out the honey and I don't want to take any chances on contributing any smells to the house.

This isn't a swarm, they apparently moved in last year...

    Field,
Thanks for the feedback and I don't disagree with a lot of your points but cut out is not an option for more than one reason, so are stinky chemical.

Once again I agree with SNL. 3.5-4" bottom entrances with full width top entrance but I screen to either side of a 4" top entrance. I run them open all year long.
