    Very nice!
    I am so jealous.

Re: Brood comb on top bars

As others have said, it is not a big problem, but it is annoying. I usually don't see much of this unless there is a little excess space between the frames above and the frames below. Maybe the notch...

Re: Good problem, but still a problem

    drlonzo, thanks for your response.
I DO have a deep nuc and some medium nuc supers I could put on top, but no drawn medium frames. I've been going foundationless (I should have mentioned that,...

Good problem, but still a problem

I'm trying to get to all mediums. It's taking some time.
I threw my old drawn deep frames in an old cardboard nuc and had it up for a swarm trap.
I took it down and set it on my patio and left for...

    Re: Adding 11-frames supers

I may not be the best to answer this since I have never gone to 11 frames, but I believe MB is talking about 11 frames in the brood nest, not the honey supers. I have used 9 frames in the honey...
  7. Re: spacer between honey super and brood box?

others with more experience can answer better than me, but I think the bees will draw a lot of burr comb with that much space between supers.

    Re: BEE inspector.

I registered my hives and I'm glad I did.
I had the inspector come out last year and wish there was enough money to get them out every year.
He made helpful suggestions and took samples of a hive...

Re: 21st century beekeeping snake oil

Guess I'm just not doing this right. I'll have to let go of his head to squeeze that rattlin thingy...
Maybe I should just contact one of them snake oil salesman and buy some oil already...

    beemandan,
I feel I owe you an apology for hijacking your post for a little cheap humor.
    I hope I didn't offend.

AND I hope nobody takes the idea of squeezing venomous snakes seriously...this...

Every time I try to squeeze this thing it starts to rattle...should I cut that rattling thing off first?

Re: 21st century beekeeping snake oil

So with this new "snake oil" treatment...does it matter what kind of snakes I use?
Do I put it in the feeder or just brush it on the bee?
Is it any better than powdered sugar? :) (sorry, I...

vcd1363, do you have pictures of the bees?
Everytime i've been called out to look at a swarm in the ground that was definitely honey bees, they have turned out to be yellow jackets. I'm not saying...

    Re: Feed them peaches?

I had a hive in a peach orchard 2 years ago and the orchard got attacked by asian beetles. The peaches were dripping on the trees. That year the honey had a tremendous peach flavor. So, like Solomon...

    Re: Smokers in cars?

I usually grab a handful of grass, twist it to make a plug, and stuff it in the open hole of the smoker. It doesn't smoke up the car, but I do put it in the trunk while I am driving. At the next stop...

Wood shavings used for rabbits or hamsters. You can get a big bag cheap in the department store pet department. I use the pine bedding rather than the cedar. It seems to work better for me.

    Re: Disappearing swarm

Giving a swarm a frame of brood may...

  21. Re: Will bees draw comb to the cell size of starter strips?

  22. Will bees draw comb to the cell size of starter strips?

I've been cutting some wax foundation that I had in a box and using it for starter strips so that the bees could draw their own comb. It just dawned on me that they might just follow the cell size of...
