  1. Re: risks of feeding syrup in inverted jar this time of year

I would notice the problem when the nightime temps were freezing & below, follwed by a sunny day with the temps in the 50s. Also, I wrap my hives in black for solar gain, which would increase daytime...
  2. Re: risks of feeding syrup in inverted jar this time of year

When there is a big swing between daytime and nightime temps.....the syrup will contract in the cool nightime temp, and then expand in the daytime temps,.. forcing the syrup out which drips on the...

Re: "Seasoning" HoneySuperCell with pollen patty

From my experience, the bees generally just don't like it on HSC, no matter how much it's sprayed with syrup or pollen pattie and "candied up". Can't say as I blame them ...having to live on...

    Re: Supering Double Nucs?

I winter over medium nucs, and prefer to stack them three high, 15 medium frames. I have them set up in pairs, 2 nucs per stand, and push them side by side and wrap both together with black tarpaper,...

Re: what to do with fall swarms?

Adam, why not establish these swarms atop of your main colonies, with a solid board divider, and try to winter them over there as nucs. Swarms always have that drive to establish themselves, draw...

    Re: Nicot system question?

I used a medium cell bar frame. I cut the height (thickness) of the top bar down to 1/2" before assembling the frame. I put the brown cell cup holders on the bottom side of the topbar for one row,...

    Re: Carniolans from Koehnen?

I purchased 17 of Koehnen's Carni queens this year, and received 18. As it turned out, one of the queens had a bad rear leg, and the bees are superceding her. I think Koehnen gave me another queen...

Re: Cloake Boards on a Nuc?

Drew....I'm glad to hear that helped. I know for me it sometimes takes some pictures to help figure the details out. That article which inspired me to make this design is in the January, 2010 issue...

Re: Cloake Boards on a Nuc?

I made a Cloake Board based on a design used by John Kefuss which I saw in an article about him in the ABJ. It looked like he used a 5 frame deep cell builder above 2 deeps, separated by the excluder...

Re: Top Section in Nicot - what for?

    fafrd......Thanks for your response.

I wonder if it's some sort of retaining area for fondant or pollen patty? But it doesn't seem like the bees could access that much through the screened grid...

Top Section in Nicot - what for?

I've been using the Nicot cage to rear some queens, and the last time I went in to remove the queen from the cage she ran into that section at the top that has a hole and runs around the backside....

Re: lot's of comb on queencell - problem?

I just checked them again today, and it looks like the bees are leaving the cap exposed on two of the three cells and not building comb over it,...just building comb along the sides. So I'll just...

I'm harvesting 3 queencells on Monday and have one that's entombed in comb as well. I'll have a better look at it then & decide what to do...or just leave & see if she can emerge ok. I wonder if this...

    fafrd, ...good for you! :)

Even though you ended up with just two cells, it was a success and those two were most likely very well fed.....hopefully to become nice, robust, healthy queens....

  25. Re: Mid March Reminder in Central NH....the bears are back
