    Re: Mike Palmer Nuc

They are great mating boxes as well and what they were originally designed for. The last queens get to stay and build up.

I can see evidence of the bees sharing heat through the 1.5 inch year round. There will often be full frames of brood against divider in both boxes with capped stores on outside frame. The main...

    Re: Mike Palmer Nuc

I cut deep boxes in half lengthwise and expand the overall width of the brood box by 2.5 inches. This allows for a very solid 1.5 inch x 10.5 inch divider board. Strips of half inch plywood(3/4 inch...

A very smart and seasoned man once told me "If you want to work on cars, learn on the starter not the brakes!" I think this fits here somehow.

    Re: Thinning/feeding thick corn syrup?

High Fructose 55 is what you would want to feed bees with. It is what is used to sweeten soda pop and such.

Would hate to find out later. Removing to isolation yard for evaluation would be my choice.

I would not allow them anywhere near my otherwise healthy colonies.

Re: Fall flow not happening in Midwest?

A couple of years ago I got to hear M palmer speak at EAS. I took lots of notes. Regarding feeding, he recommended feeding with 1 gallon paint cans and up to 4 gallons at a time on a single colony...

I'd be checking mite levels and looking for funky brood.

Was this hive inspected and ok two weeks ago? Did you find eggs and capped worker brood post swarm? Can you post pictures of any brood that remains, and a picture or two of the empty combs? Do you...

How old is that hive? Have you done any mite counts? I am 20 miles from you and mite loads are very high for me. Also, the farmer around me sprayed Warrior on the Beck's soybean fields in mid July....

    Re: No Honey

IMO, feed them now and feed them a lot at once. No quart every other day. I would feed them 2 to 1 sugar or high fructose 55 if you can get your hands on it. Or honey. A gallon or more at a time. 1...

Re: Advice on the number of nucs I can make up.

My experimentation with wintering nucs was inspired by your talks at last year's EAS meeting Michael. I am using a deep hive body that has been cut and expanded by 2 inches in width as my foundation....

Re: 2014 Walter T Kelley Nucs

We have requeened all 3 of the nucs the we picked up in April. These have been down right nasty bees. Not only at the hive, but 200 yards away for a couple of hours after inspection/manipulation.

As far as the top feeding goes, I usually feed under the outer cover but I have seen others place a larger tin can over the jar on top of the hive to keep the light out.
