Re: What kind of weird bee is this?

It makes sense that they were attracted to the hive, there was a lot of scenting going on after the shakeout. The weird part was how she kept landing on a bee. . . she'd stay there for two or three...

Re: What kind of weird bee is this?

Thank you for your answer, and with all due respect, I am 99% sure this is not a honeybee.

What kind of weird bee is this?

9933I shook out a laying worker hive this morning, putting in its place a different hive with frames of open brood and nurse bees. I went back a couple of hours later and this little bee was hovering...
  5. If there is royal jelly in a queen cup, is there always a larva?

I did a cut out of a suspected queenless hive on March 15th, good population, decent stores, no brood or eggs whatsoever.

I waited a week before inspecting, they were bringing in pollen, had...

Poll: Re: Do you build back after demo on a cut out?

I ask if they have someone they like who can fix it for them. If they do, I recommend they use that person, since I up my rate and spend extra time if they need me to do it.

Re: Cut out from behind plaster walls

Hey thank you Intheswamp for the compliments. I also hope the queen turns up, Saltybee you may be right. Today they are acting like they are 'at home' so I'll crack open the hive in a week or so and...

Re: Cut out from behind plaster walls

For anyone interested, I posted a much larger and nicer photoset (taken by a very talented photographer and not my cellphone!) on my beekeeping facebook page here:...

Re: Cut out from behind plaster walls

No eggs or Larvae whatsoever. Today they are kind of acting like they're at 'home' in their new box and they are clustering together, maybe she is in there.

That orange line is an electric wire...

Re: Cut out from behind plaster walls

Hello all. I did the cutout today, it was more or less straightforward and I got paid so no complaints. Two things are worth mentioning in this follow-up: the walls were made out of concrete (yes! or...

Re: Cut out from behind plaster walls

Once again some great advice and a lot of things to think about. I have done a handful of cutouts before, I am no expert but I have done them both from the inside and the outside, this is just the...

Re: Cut out from behind plaster walls

Thank you very much folks some great advice here. I think, in order to control dust and mitigate the effects of dusty lead paint I will in fact try chipping away the plaster and then attacking the...

Cut out from behind plaster walls

I'm looking for advice on doing a cutout from behind a plaster wall. The bees are coming into a crack in between bricks on a second story building, at about the level of the floor. Getting to them...
  14. Re: Does anybody own The World History of Beekeeping and Honey Hunting by Eva Crane?

You're lucky to have such a well stocked library! My local one doesn't have it, and even the University of Virginia library, which has never let me down in the past, doesn't have it.
  15. Re: Does anybody own The World History of Beekeeping and Honey Hunting by Eva Crane?

Thanks for the tip, but this is one that deserves to be on a shelf.

    Re: Queen and robbing help!

A neighbor who has two hives but is a little bee-shy asked me to help them inspect their hives this past Saturday, and each one of them was jammed full of drones, and there were still capped drone...
  17. Does anybody own The World History of Beekeeping and Honey Hunting by Eva Crane?

If you do, could you do me a huge favor and scan the sections on Iceland and email them to me? I would love to have this gigantic book in my own library but it is, for the moment, out of my budget.
  18. Re: Hive removal call. Are these bees or yellow jackets ?

I would bet your gas money those are yellow jackets.

Re: bees flying into a light??

Or perhaps, knowing that there has been a period of darkness, they see the eastern light as a presage to the rising sun and the start of a new work day.

    Re: What would you do?

I would keep my plans to myself so that I didn't have to deal with all the cranks on beesource. Good luck to you.
  21. Re: Apis mellifera ruttneri (the Maltese sub-species)

Oh I love Malta! Yes please tell us more about these bees! What's beekeeping like on Malta? Hive types, number of hives, forage availability, disease problems. . . I wanna know it all!
  22. Re: Will the constant use of swarm cells for re-queening and making increases...

I don't think this is how selection works. If you have bees which are genetically inclined to swarm, with a statistically significant frequency which is greater than any other given hive, then ANY...

As much as selecting the children of body builders will result in more strong children.
