Re: Laying Worker in Queen Right Hive

Thanks for taking a stab at the question. The Swarm hive absolutely has a viable queen with capped worker brood. The nuc hive does not yet have any capped worker brood and you may be right about not...

Re: Laying Worker in Queen Right Hive

Different scenarios in the two hives.

The swarm hive has a queen that is laying single eggs in cells but on the periphery of the frame there are cells with 4-5-6-7 eggs in a single cell. This hive...

Laying Worker in Queen Right Hive

I have two hives that are queen right but have laying workers. One was a swarm I caught in a bait hive and one is a nuc that raised a queen on a split. If I shake out the hive, can I move the old...

Re: Keeping Russian Bee Stock Pure in Apiary

An operation in futility, give it up the idea of "pure". "Highly influenced by" I would be on board with but pure, no.

Re: When to Rotate Hive Bodies

I mainly tried checkerboarding undrawn frames but even split a few hives, they all swarmed anyway. I did not have drawn super frames to add during the flow.

I understand it will be variable year...

    When to Rotate Hive Bodies

I am located in Kansas, this is my second year of getting my hives through the winter. Last year I made the decision not to rotate hive bodies and despite my swarm control efforts all but one of my...

    Wax Moths and Cold Weather

I found I have wax moth larvae in my stored supers in my basement. I put the supers outside to kill the larvae as we have had nights down into the teens over the last week or so. Will this kill all...

    Re: Settling Honey

Well, something is "settling" at the bottom, like I described earlier it is a milky like substance. I have seen some other raw honey do this from some other beekeepers.

    Re: Settling Honey

I don't believe it is fermentation as all the honey was capped before it was extracted. Maybe it is granulating? I will try the placing in hot water thing on a few jars.

    Settling Honey

I harvested a couple hundred pounds of honey in early summer and the honey I have left over is settling out. It is a milky coloration and very thick in the bottom third of each jar. Last fall I...

    Red Cedar Flow

Thats a joke but seriously, over the last several weeks every time I go out to the bee yard my bees are hammering the Red Cedars. I can hear and see them all over the cedar trees. I imagine they are...

The owner of the land where I keep my bees is planning on cutting and spraying the small 2 acre area patch where I keep my hives. He will be using a 24d herbicide and perhaps something else. He will...

They were given larvae after the check. I figure they will let me know regardless but I wanted opinions based on the appearance of the virgins and the time frame for future reference.

    Virgin Queens

I had a hive swarm on the 30th of April. I checked the hive looking for eggs or brood and found nothing. I did find the queen. She is short and stubby running frantically all over. I took queen cells...

I realize there are an immense number of variables to consider but what would you say is a (and I hate to even use the word) "normal" percentage of your second year hives or older that swarm?
