  1. Re: Woo hoo! First time cut out from a damaged tree.

Ok quick update. The 17th and 18th we had flash flood warnings and I could not check the queen. Today however I got out to my mini bee yard and added a honey super to my big hive and transferred a...
  2. Re: Woo hoo! First time cut out from a damaged tree.

Ok I could not wait until the 18th and so I took a quick peek. The queen cell I spotted and took a pic of was capped over. But then I noticed another capped queen cell just 7 or 10 cells over to the...
  3. Re: Woo hoo! First time cut out from a damaged tree.

Lol I am not thinking they will be better or more resistant to anything. I just thought "hey I should try this at least once." It is all for fun and the experience. Once all done I now have a story...
  4. Re: Woo hoo! First time cut out from a damaged tree.

Ok cool. So per the calendar I will wait 17 days which should put me right at the start of larva being there or a day or two into it. So Thursday 6/18 I will check it again. Until then I will keep my...
  5. Re: Woo hoo! First time cut out from a damaged tree.

Ok so is this an uncapped queen cell or hatched queen cell? I am guessing uncapped.

    18781

There was only the one queen cell in the hive. No new eggs/larva. All the larva I put into the hive...
  6. Re: Woo hoo! First time cut out from a damaged tree.

Ok yea so per you and that chart since I moved the larva over around 9am Friday then queen cells should have started mid day Sunday and I should check now. If no started queen cells then I need to...
  7. Re: Woo hoo! First time cut out from a damaged tree.

The bees are actively foraging and going in and out of the hive with good frequency. It is so hard trying to leave them alone. I want to see their progress so bad. Just a few more days and then I...
  8. Re: Woo hoo! First time cut out from a damaged tree.

Ok then. So here in about a week on a non-rainy day I will check on them to see progress. The trick now is to pray for a clear day lol. We have had sooooo much rain recently.
  9. Re: Woo hoo! First time cut out from a damaged tree.

Ok so I went and checked on the bees last night and the hive box looked abandoned. On one of the frames of comb I added there was a handful of bees in there. No queen to be seen. I looked in the tree...
  10. Re: Woo hoo! First time cut out from a damaged tree.

Ok I am heading back there this evening to see the activity. If they are still in the trunk I will try that. I don't think I can get the hive up to the top of the trunk by myself and have the...
  11. Re: Woo hoo! First time cut out from a damaged tree.

Thank you all for the advice. I would have researched more but this was a last minute thing and the tree owner was just going to exterminate the bees that evening if no one could come.

    There are...
  12. Woo hoo! First time cut out from a damaged tree.

    Hello all

I am a novice beek just 3 years into the hobby with a wild swarm and two purchased nukes under my belt. My step monther got a call last night from a lady that said they have a tree that...
  13. Re: New bee keeper tragedy but may have silver lining.

Ok checked things out and there was lots of wax shavings in the bottom of the hive an not a colony living in there. Looks like I need to clean things up and pack stuff away to keep other bugs out if...
  14. Re: New bee keeper tragedy but may have silver lining.

Ok thank you all for the additional opinions. I am realistic and expecting this to be robbers but am hopeful that an early swarm has moved in. Who knows what has happened? Here in a few days I will...
  15. Re: New bee keeper tragedy but may have silver lining.

Ok thank you. I will not have a chance to really check the hive early morning until Friday. I will do that then right at sun up and see what kind of activity there is and report back.
  16. New bee keeper tragedy but may have silver lining.

    Hello fellow beeks

Lasted year I purchased my first nuke. Things were great! There was a small (or what I thought was small), SHB infestation. I treated with Nematodes to try and fight them back....
  17. Re: Expanding while mixing foundation and foundation-less

Ok a good bit of time has passed. I did get around to adding the 3rd hive body after the second was full. The second box looked awesome with all strait comb. I added a few frames to the 3rd box and...

    Re: New screened inner cover

I thought about that but I already have a couple boxes already to long (20 1/4"). So I am going to make a cover and bottom the same length and just have one hive all to long. I'll start a new hive in...

    Re: New screened inner cover

Ok so my inner cover has been on for a while now. As described in another thread I made some mis measurements and needed to make a second inner cover the proper length so that the telescoping cover...
  20. Re: Hey Newbees, who started this year, got a hive you want to brag on?

    12471

First year beek here. I am not harvesting honey yet like some but I am happy so far. I started with a 5 frame nuk in early May. I just added my 3rd 10 frame deep yesterday. I had to lift the...

Congrats on the small swarm doing well. Hope the new swarm pick up goes well too.
  22. Re: Foundationless Frames in a Langstroth Hive in N.H.

I started a hive this year but had the first box started with foundation and the second added box is foundationless. I just moved a couple frames from the bottom box to the empty box on top. The bees...
  23. Re: Learn wood working the best way... With mistakes!

Thanks for all the words of wisdom and help. I may have to look into a jig setup eventually down the road. I am making this a 3 year project and after expanding from 1 to 4 hives in that time, of I...
  24. Re: Learn wood working the best way... With mistakes!

Lol ok so along the lines of what marsh said. I am measuring 20" cause my tape measure's tap is 1/8" off. So you are correct 19 7/8 is the proper measurement.
  25. Learn wood working the best way... With mistakes!

    Oh boy!

I learned a lot today. I went to add a new screened inner cover on today and found all sorts of problems.

First off I purchased a 10 frame deep kit from a manufacture to start my bees...
