  1. Re: Exposed hive in the -20 frozen tundra of NE Ohio

Very cool Mr. Beeman. I am hoping they are alive in there. Keeping fingers crossed.
  2. Re: Exposed hive in the -20 frozen tundra of NE Ohio

    Definately Nazi's. I meant long
  3. Re: Exposed hive in the -20 frozen tundra of NE Ohio

Yeah. Lots of pretty queen cells. And I will definately post more pics.
  4. Re: Exposed hive in the -20 frozen tundra of NE Ohio

I have no idea if they are in the hollow or even how big it is. Definately going to wait for warmer weather and the 3' of snow around the tree to melt before doing anything. Whatever I end up doing...
  5. Exposed hive in the -20 frozen tundra of NE Ohio

So I saw this on my way home from work. The pics don't really do it justice, this hive is huge. I would estimate the combs at 4-5' London and at least 3' deep. It's about 20' up. Didn't see any signs...

A pic of the TBH on the deck. The girls tucked away far a long winters nap
  7. Re: Hello from the frozen wastland of northern Ohio.

    Welcome from another Ohio beek.
Sounds like you are on the right track.
I second drlonzo on the idea you might already have some good feral bee genetics available. Maybe look into a trap out....

    Re: Hello from Northeast Ohio!

I am a first year beek about an hour north of you. I presently have three TBH. I would be happy to have you up to check them out and see if maybe you want to go that route. I was in your position...

    Honey weight???

I have top bar hives and was wondering about how much a fully drawn and capped 17" top bar would weigh. Trying not to go out and buy a scale for a one time use, but would like to estimate how many...

    Re: Help, aggressive bees

    Thanks Michael.
I have your book and do rely on it quite a bit. I am using tbh now but think I can incorporate that info successfully.

    Re: Help, aggressive bees

Thanks everyone. I think the thread got a little bit off what I was looking for. I live in a rural area on an acre. The closest neighboring home is about 50 yards away and all the neighbors have been...

    Re: Help, aggressive bees

Thank you everybody. The hive on the back deck hasn't been a problem until today. We don't use the deck and it is fenced so the bees are sequestered from the neighbors. I thought that with the bee...

    Help, aggressive bees

We live in northeast ohio and are first year beeks with top bar hives. We have three hives now that have come from two cut outs and one swarm. The swarm hive has always been a little more aggressive,...

    Re: vented bee suit

Love my bee kool from blue sky. A lot more reasonably priced too.
  22. Re: Post your Ohio swarm calls 2013 and 2014

I have read that the swarms are a month behind here in northern ohio due to the crappy cold spring. Read it a few different places. Keeping fingers crossed that is the case.
  23. Re: Post your Ohio swarm calls 2013 and 2014

Two calls on Memorial Day weekend Saturday and that has been it.
  24. Re: May 29th and still waiting on the first swarm call

I am in northeast Ohio. Had two swarm calls last Saturday and could only get to one. Got them successfully. Hoping to get more soon. Good luck.

Re: First hive three days in

Thanks for the advice. I didn't put a package in, I caught a swarm, and as Sovak said, I plan on checking weekly. So far, so good.
