Yeah Charlie, it probably isn't any hotter than using an electric hot knife.

    Re: Uncapping Honey

If the gun is hot enough to melt the wax what is it doing to the honey?

    The Art of Beekeeping

How do you see the Art of Beekeeping? What examples can you share w/ us? I see the art of beekeeping in the creative ways beekeepers interact w/ their bees and the ways they address problems and...

    Re: Storm Knocked hives over

Brian was simply making a pre-emptive strike. He knew someone would bring it up.

What if we could selectively breed swarming tendency out of a line of bees? What would that produce?
  7. Re: Will the constant use of swarm cells for re-queening and making increases...

Is it too simplistic to say that if it is a heritable trait it can be selected for? So wouldn't the use of swarm cells promote that trait. There are worse things though, aren't there? I wonder what...

Re: Africanized Bees: Friend or Foe?

Mexico has more managed bee hives per square mile than anywhere else in North America and there are AHB in the US, so, no, I don't think they have a good zone defense.

Re: Africanized Bees: Friend or Foe?

Well WLC, I understand that they are in the only county in Texas which isn't designated Africanized. Why do you suppose that is?
  13. Re: taking brood frames from second hive - take adult bees with it?

Feel free. I'm sure I didn't make it up myself. But I sure have lived it.

How do you like my new tag line? "Quit Complaining and Fix It" I stole that one from Dan Bergram.

Re: EFB or chalk brood ?

It's hard to tell from the photos. Ones in the bottom row look like laying worker brood pattern, but I'm not sure. If you have Chalk Brood there should be mummys or pellets on the hive floor. Are...

    Re: Knowing size of cluster?

You can remove the cover off of a hive of bees any day of the year, as long as all you are doing is looking down between the frames and not removing them.

I had some further thoughts on this. It's only a quart or a quart and a half. Why not just keep it in the refrigerator and use it up as soon as possible. Refrigeration should keep the high moisture...

They should recover. Time will tell. Mine have. There will be some dead bees and perhaps some brood damaged, but, as long as thgere is a healthy queen and enough bees the colony should rebound.
