  1. Re: How many guard bees are in a normal hive?

Their name tags are so small it's hard to tell the guards from the greeters.

    (I have no idea :))

    Re: The trouble with Russians

Standard disclaimer: Im new and dont know much :)
Are we assuming nucs = $200-ish?
    Pkg. = $120-ish?
Is the price of a nuc that much more than a package when you...

    Smoke is your friend.
Veil, Hive tool, pocket knife, are most used in that order.
Had to get out my leather gloves a few days ago to reduce an entrance. Robbers were...

  7. Re: Setting out drained crushed comb for bees to clean up

This is my first year. Forgot to mention that.
I thought they would go back home at dark and I could pick up a cleaned frame. I was a little shocked when I picked up a frame covered in bees.
  8. Re: Setting out drained crushed comb for bees to clean up

I set an empty out one evening last week for bees to clean. There was about 100 bees still on it two hours after dark.
Checked the next morning and there were 500 more there and quite a fight had...

Re: Newbees, Mediums and AFB -- a cautionary tale

Im a new guy and I'm a little confused now. If AFB doesn't show any outward signs how do you know if you have it? Should i be sending samples to a bee lab at regular intervals?

    Washboarding

Took a walk out to the hives this evening and got to watch the bees doing a wash boarding dance for the first time. They seemed calm and intent on learning the correct steps. Couple steps forward,...

dead bees in front of entrance

Found them in a pile right below the entrance. Looks like undertaker bees are hauling them off.
Maybe 100-200. All look to have their stingers intact, tongues are hanging out.
    They look...

What a mess! They had quite a bit of nectar stored in those combs already. The comb just fell apart as I cut it down. I did find eggs and larvae, there's definitely a laying queen somewhere in...

Re: Newby and smoke and mean bees ...

I've used grass, weeds from the fence row, pine needles/cones, and smoker pellets. More than once a combination of those. I haven't noticed any difference in the bees reaction.
