Do these wild horses have giant groundhog-sized mites biting them nonstop and sucking their blood out--I think not....Feral hives are alot harder to come by especially if by feral you mean over 2...
how many hives are you running ace?? Mite counts directly relate to overwintering success a hive with a large mite population in August is usually doomed to death in the winter. When did you measure...
Waterbird, out of curiosity how did you check for mites? The reason I ask is because a visual check for the most part is anecdotal, you need a mite counting method--If you did a sugar shake/ether...
Hello,
I had originally planned on using a swarm box starter queenright finisher for raising some queens for myself this year but that was assuming I would have seven big hives to work...
As a "Daddy" I would highly recommend some reading on bees prior to getting them so you have some understanding as to what is going on in the hive--being that that ship has sailed I would recommend...
With all due respect Max, did you just crawl out from under a rock?
overrated who ha in my opinion. I just make cribbing 2 tiers high from scrap 4x4s and put a solid bottom board over that. The amount of mites that actually fall through the screen is negligible when...
She could be an old fart queen who ran out of sperm also--Do you see any supersedure cells at all? If not stick a frame of brood with some eggs and young larvae in there and see if they try to rear a...
You should be inspecting alot more and you will find problems much quicker and be able to deal with them before the hive is too far gone. For a new package I would be inspecting progress weekly
Well it worked 24 hours later queen is on frame and laying so I guess she is pleased to have the space
Hello,
I was doing a search on the forum on splitting the brood nest, but alot of the posts were concerning preventing swarming, which is not an issue in my case.
I have a 10 frame hive that...
did you do a mite count in the fall?
It doesnt matter that much--the bees will move the globs of wax as needed--the coating is only there to create a "head start" for the bees and encourage them to draw their own wax
At 135 each plus shipping beeweaver prices for packages are rather expensive--is the price justified for those out there who have bought from them before? On face I cant see how but I would like...
I think 75 is more than several.... I would really make sure they have good ventilation and that you have a large enough truck to put them in without blocking both screened sides of the packages. At...
You can...but in that amount of time especially in a nectar dearth the bees can uncap and eat/move most of that honey, so I would pay attention to the nectar flows in your area or ask a local...
Feed sugar syrup 1:1
Plastic is a huge time saver--I just inserted foundation into 80 frames in about 15 minutes-it pops right in. Compared to wiring adding eyelets inserting and removing the wooden wedge--hours of...
Why would you not treat if you have a problem with mites as this hive appears to have had, as noted by the low cluster size?
Very poor quality--see my post here

Update: The article in the April edition of Bee culture regarding "Buying Nucs", tells a similar horrible story from another customer. Though the apiary is not named it is certainly White Oak, which...
BUMP Get off the treadmill this year and do some splits! (Not the kind that will put you in traction...)
2013 Heads up on this (yes I am still annoyed....) For anyone thinking about White Oak Nucs look at COW Docs photos pretty conclusive and similar to what I experienced
Dixie did you do any mite counts?
Please don't take this the wrong way but this is asked weekly--try the search function for pages of answers and experiences
